In this house, over several years, winged termite swarmers would appear in the main level. The owner used an OTC insecticide and thought he was controlling the problem because the swarmers would die and he wouldn't see them again until the next spring. However, termite swarmers typically only appear in the spring and they don't eat wood. Their sole purpose is to leave the colony, reproduce and begin new colonies. This will happen every spring as long as the colonies are active. Swarmers are a sign of a larger problem. The termite workers who travel in mud tubes and stay hidden behind walls or in the wood itself, cause the damage. The owner asked us for an inspection and we found these guys in the crawlspace.
