Why would we spray foam as smooth as butter in an attic where no one will ever see it? Basic pride in our work is my honest answer. Our crew sometimes goes into awkward spaces to put thermal protection and air barriers where the client's budget allows. Occasionally, this means spray foaming the ceiling instead of the attic roof. With this job, our client really wanted his attic to stay vented; he wanted the old, nasty insulation out for general health benefits, but also wanted to air seal the top of his conditioned space to lower his energy bill. He had no intention of ever storing stuff up there, and so spraying down on the ceiling was much more affordable. Duh, the surface area of the ceiling was 20% less than the roof decking. Since there was plenty of roof pitch, we got it done. Every client can have unique needs, and many have a tight budget. New home in Brydstown TN has been foamed ! Open cell on the walls and roof will keep all the conditioned air inside the home envelope from now on. Client weighed the pros and cons of the cost of fiberglass versus sprayfoam. They decided the money they will save over the next 5 to 10 years will more than pay them back in energy savings. Their beautiful cabinets and counter tops and flooring will also certainly be enjoyed and bring happiness ….but those materials won’t bring comfort, quietness, and energy savings.
