If you're noticing small, dead branches or dead leaves like the photos below, don't be alarmed! This is called flagging and is from the female cicadas laying their eggs in the branch. The affected branches will eventually die and fall to the ground where the cicada nymphs will enter the ground to start the cycle again.

EAB (Emerald Ash Borer) is an invasive pest destroying millions of ash trees across Missouri and the United States. While the adult beetles cause relatively little damage, their larvae destroy the tree by feeding on the xylem layer and damaging the tree's ability to move water and nutrients throughout the tree. If left untreated this damage will lead to canopy dieback and eventually the death of the tree.
