RESCUING WILDLIFE IS LEGAL - KEEPING WILDLIFE IS NOT. Indiana wildlife belongs to ALL Hoosiers and properly caring for wildlife is important. Wildlife regulations keep species safe and ensure humane treatment of wildlife. When truly orphaned or injured wildlife is rescued, the animal MUST be turned over to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator within 24 hours. Wildlife rehabilitators must follow strict guidelines for housing wildlife and are subject to tests and inspections. For information on licenses, permits, becoming a rehabilitator, or for a list of current rehabilitators, please visit on.IN.gov/keepwildlifewild. Contact a rehabilitator before getting involved.

Have you seen this salamander? The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is tracking records of the Mudpuppy, an aquatic salamander that occurs in Indiana’s lakes and streams. They have a slender body, four legs, and feathery gills on the side of their head (the gills may be flat when out of water). They are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Indiana but are occasionally caught by anglers or seen in the shallow waters of lakes during late winter and spring. If you have a photograph of this salamander from Indiana waters, please consider sending it along with the observation date and location to the DNR Herpetologist at [email protected]. Your record will be included in the state’s database. We appreciate any information you can provide about where this most interesting and secretive salamander lives in our state.
