A homeowner called us out for one breaker that had failed.

When we opened her panel, it wasn't brand new, but it wasn't one we'd say had to be replaced either.

So along with everything from a full replacement down to swapping the one breaker, one of her options was a panel refresh.

A panel refresh keeps the box you already have. Inside it, every breaker and every connection gets replaced, and the circuits get labeled.

She chose the refresh.

You plug something in and it just sags right back out.

The outlet is worn out. The metal contacts inside lose their grip over the years, and once they're loose they don't tighten back up.

So it's a replacement, not a repair. There's no adjusting it back to where it was.

Worth doing sooner than later, because a loose grip means a loose connection, and loose connections are where heat starts.

When we find a loose connection at an outlet or a switch, we replace the device. We don't just tighten the screw and move on.

Here's why.

If it was loose long enough to get warm, the metal inside has already been through it. Tightening the screw makes it look fixed. It doesn't undo the heat.

A device that has cooked once will do it again, and the next person who opens it has no way of knowing it already happened.

So we take it out and put a new one in. That's the standard we work to.

Most of it is helping somebody understand their own system.

What that breaker is doing. Why that outlet quit. What is actually going on behind the wall, in words that make sense.

Because once you understand it, you can make a real decision about your own house. What to do now, what can wait, what you would rather leave alone.

That's the part that matters. The work comes after.

This is the top of a panel, where the power comes into the house.

Those are the main lugs. That's where the big wires land.

What you're looking at is heat damage. The insulation is cooked back, there's corrosion on the metal, and the panel itself is stained underneath it.

Here's the thing about this particular spot. It sits ahead of the main breaker. Most of the panel is protected by a breaker. This part isn't.

And it never shows up inside the house. No flickering, no tripping, nothing. It only turns up when somebody opens the cover and looks.

A power strip protects what's plugged into it. That's about where it ends.

A whole home surge protector mounts right at the panel and takes the hit before it gets into the house. So your AC, your oven, your water heater and everything else that isn't plugged into a strip is covered too.

Around here we get surges from storms and the utility side, and most of them are small enough that you never feel one. The damage adds up quietly.

If you've never looked at whether you have one, it's worth knowing.

Roger had us add a generator receptacle box outside his house, plus an interlock and the generator breaker inside the panel.

That setup is what lets you run the house off a portable generator without dragging cords through a window.

Your lights dip for a second when the air conditioner kicks on.

We get asked about that one a lot, especially in the summer.

An AC pulls a big load in the first second it starts, and everything else on the system feels it for a moment. A quick dip is normal.

What's NOT normal is lights that dim and stay dim, that dip every time something small turns on, or that flicker on their own with nothing running.

If it's doing that, have somebody take a look at it.
