There is a deep and meaningful purpose behind a lot of the traditions we see at Christmas time.
COLORS
RED. The color of passion. The color of blood. The color of love. All of which refer to the God who took on flesh and blood to show His love for us, and Who's blood ran openly to give us everlasting life.
GREEN. The color of life. The color of spring and new leaves and spriggs. It refers to the newly born life of the Baby Jesus, and the new life we find in Him.
BLUE. The color of peace. The color of joy. Real unshakable peace, like a calm ocean or bluebird skies. When we have the promise of eternal life with God, and the show of His love in the Christ Child, we have unshakable peace, which gives everlasting joy.
GOLD. The precious metal. A rare metal. A color for royalty and power. A pure metal. All of these describe the life and love of God to us through the birth of Jesus.
SILVER. Same as gold.
THE USE OF EVERGREENS. Evergreens never loose their color of life. A symbol of the everlasting life Jesus came to give us.
WREATHS. A never ending circle of evergreens. A double symbol of eternal life.
CHRISTMAS TREES. Bringing an evergreen tree into a building where it doesn't naturally belong. Doing so will kill the evergreen tree. A very deep and rich symbol of God born into this fallen world, in surroundings not supportive of the greatness that He is, that environment eventually killed Him on a tree. The tree reminds us of the better life He gives us, of everlasting life, and the passing of the tree reminds us of our unworthiness to recieve Him, of the betrayal our sin, of the need for His life to be given for our benefit. In so many ways, the Christmas tree is a symbol of the birth of Christ.
SILVERBELLS. Heralding of an important message. Announcement of something coming that we need to be aware of. Thats why they tie them to a sled or a bicycle. Take note of the significance of the birth of Jesus! Tell the Good News.
CANDLES AND LIGHTS. Jesus is the light of the world. Light shining in the darkness. As believers and followers, we are also called to be light in the darkness so that all may see Him.
DECEMBER 25TH. The darkest week of the year. Shortest days, longest nights. The winter. Cold, wet, and dreary days. Days when people suffer more depression and sadness. Days when the sick and weak are taken from us by a common cold. It is precisely in this week that we celebrate and remind ourselves of the greatest, brightest, most joyful day in history. A time to show our love for those close to us, and to all mankind. All of this reminds us of, and symbolizes the condition of this world at the birth of Jesus. This world is so much in need of Him.
GIFT GIVING. Shows our love for each other and reminds us of the best gift ever given in that manger.
SO DON'T LET ANYONE BELITTLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS. KEEP THEM GOING PROUDLY. LET YOUR LIGHTS SHINE. HANG YOUR LIGHTS, WREATHS, AND MISTLETOES. WASTE THE MONEY ON A DYING REAL TREE, GIFTS, ETC. BUT DO THEM ALL WITH MEANING. DON'T FORGET THE REASON FOR IT ALL. TALK TO YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS ABOUT THESE THINGS AS YOU DECORATE AND CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF JESUS.
Merry Christmas everyone!
