Cool nights are here, time to fire up the furnace!
If you haven’t turned your heat on yet, now is a great time to give your furnace a test run before the really cold weather arrives. Here are a few quick tips from your friends at Complete Comfort:
1. Change your filter.
A dirty filter can restrict airflow, make your furnace work harder, and reduce efficiency. If you can’t remember the last time you changed it… it’s probably time!
2. Turn the thermostat up a few degrees.
Let the furnace run long enough to make sure it starts, heats properly, and shuts off when it reaches the set temperature.
3. Don’t panic if you smell a little dust!
The first heat cycle of the season can burn off dust that has settled inside the furnace over the summer. A brief dusty smell can be normal. If you smell gas, burning plastic, or an electrical odor, shut the system off and give us a call.
4. Check your vents.
Make sure supply vents and return-air vents aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, toys, or other items.
5. Listen for anything unusual.
Banging, squealing, grinding, rattling, or other new noises are worth having checked out.
6. Test your carbon monoxide detectors.
Any home with fuel-burning appliances should have working CO detectors. Test them before heating season gets underway!
And one of the best tips?
Don’t wait until the first REALLY cold night to discover your furnace has a problem! A quick test run now can save you from a cold house later.
Of course if you have a serious issue and are need of service, give us a call!
