Sadly this is all too common when we go in for a sump pump inspection. The primary pump had stopped working and the check valve wasn't stopping the water from coming back into the basin. We showed up in the nick of time. One more day and the basement would've been under water.
The sump pump you see here has whats called a tether float. Inside the plastic enclosure is a metal ball, once the water level gets high enough the metal ball hits two contacts inside the enclosure and then triggers the pump. These tether floats are very poor performing and have massive failure rates. Plus it takes 12 inches of water inside the basin to make it trigger the pump. So for example, if your system doesn't run that often you could end up with a cesspool of bacteria filled water, which gets very smelly while sitting and waiting to be pumped out.
Whereas, the Zoeller vertical float only takes 7.25" of water to activate and turns off at 2" keeping the water level in the basin to a minimum.
It pays to have your system inspected on a yearly basis. That's why we offer annual zero cost maintenance inspections to all of our customers. If we find a problem with anything we've installed during the warranty period it gets replaced at no cost to the customer. We stand behind our work, our reputation is riding on it!
