We find all kinds of covers over the opening to a septic tank when the pump out plug has broken. Although a piece of metal may seem like a good replacement, the opening is not secure and this is a safety and liability issue. The proper way to replace a concrete plug on the septic tank is to install a riser and lid. This prevents accidental opening as the lid is secured with screws and also prevents rain water and sand from entering the septic tank.

We were on two different jobs in one day where roots were an issue. The first job was backing up because the roots from a tree had grown into the septic tank and had to be removed. The second job had a mat of roots growing into the tank. It is very important that you not have trees near any part of your septic system.

This system has a septic tank and a lift station. The top and middle openings are for the septic tank. The bottom one is for the lift station. A sump pump is in the bottom of the tank, it is connected to the white pipe. As the water from the septic tank flows into the lift station, a float rises. When it reaches a certain level it turns the pump on. This pumps the water in the tank into the drain field. As the water is pumped out, the float drops down and the pump then turns off.

The inlet pipe of your septic tank is an important part of your system however it is often overlooked when backup issues occur. The inlet pipe should have a cleanout tee with a screw off cap. This allows access to the inlet pipe for jetting. In the event of a plumbing backup you can take off the cap and let the water flow out. It is important that the inlet pipe has fall toward the tank and doesn't have any dips or low spots.

We highly recommend that you have a riser on your septic tank to allow easy access for maintenance or in the event of a plumbing backup. This septic tank has a riser but it is buried under at least 6" of dirt. This defeats the purpose of having a riser because you have to dig it up to access the septic tank. This problem can be resolved by adding a riser ring to bring access to grade.

Toilet paper, that was a hot topic during the pandemic! Now that we have plenty, there are some brands that are better than others for your septic tank. You want to use toilet paper that will break down. To test, pull off a sheet, put it is a jar with a lid and shake. The paper should break down and come apart. The reason you want it to break down is so it doesn't create a thick, top layer in your septic tank. When this happens, water isn't able to flow from your plumbing pipes into the tank which will then cause a backup in your home.
