Got a call in City Heights for a 2011 Toyota Corolla sitting on 35th Street. Every single key was gone.

No spare. No backup. Nothing.

The owner spent all weekend looking for the key, hoping it would turn up. It never did.
I made new keys right there on-site and had him driving again within the hour.

Your Honda key is trying to tell you something.

If it is getting stiff, hard to turn, or you have to wiggle it to get the engine going, the ignition is wearing out. This owner kept working this key back and forth until it finally broke.

We see this constantly around San Diego. Most people ignore it until they are stranded in a parking lot in the middle of July, sweating like it’s nobody’s business.

Last week, I showed up to make a key for a Honda Civic. All keys lost. Cut a new key on-site, programmed the remote, done.

Before I could pack up, her roommate walked over. He said he needed a Harley-Davidson barrel key for his Sportster. Made that one right there in the driveway as well.

Went out for one job and left with two roommates taken care of. Not a bad way to finish the day.

Fourth of July hits different when you've worn the uniform.

I spent years in the Marine Corps. The country I signed up to defend just turned 250, and that means something to me. Semper Fi still means the same thing over 20 years later.

Call came in at six thirty this morning. Someone lost the key to their VW Jetta, needed a new one cut and programmed. Got dressed, grabbed the tools, out the door before the sun was really up.

Texted when I was about 10 minutes out. Nothing. Pulled up. Knocked. Called. Nothing. Waited 10 minutes. Then I turned around and drove back home. An hour round trip for a key I never got to cut.
It's frustrating, I won't lie. But what gets me is other people out there in a real bind right now, locked out, or lost the only key they've got. My mission is to help people if the need arises. One no-show doesn't change that.

When I got back to the house, I grabbed the dog and we knocked out a 3 mile walk to shake it off. Ready for whoever actually needs me next.

A property manager in Santee had a problem most people don't think about until it happens to them: a tenant moves out, a new one moves in, and nobody knows how many copies of the old key are still floating around.
This happened on Wheatlands Ave, down the street from BNS Brewery, back in April. Same day the new tenant moved in, we re-keyed the whole building. Changed the pins inside the existing locks so every old key stopped working, then cut fresh keys for the new tenant.
No new hardware needed. No gap where the building sat unsecured between move-out and move-in.
If you manage commercial property in East County, this is the kind of thing worth knowing about before your next turnover.

I do that too, but that’s not even close to the whole list.

Car keys, smart keys, key fobs, transponder keys, Harley keys, lockouts, rekeys, mailbox locks, commercial locks, and key programming.

Had a customer come into the Lakeside shop with a car key that looked like it had served two deployments and a divorce.

Rounded cuts, twisted blade, and the blade was broken off.

Made them a fresh key before their blade disappeared and ruined my customer's day.

Some keys don’t retire; they get medically separated.
