Field Spotlight: Bonnie — Part 2

Bonnie isn't just leading projects. She's helping develop the people around her!

Alongside Handa and ICF, Bonnie has been guiding her team through a wide range of projects, including an AIM Vision Plan for a rehabilitation center and a masterplan and housing project serving people in the region.

Much of her work happens behind the scenes!

She's guiding younger architects through complex projects, teaching detailed drawing and construction administration, and leading periodic trainings to strengthen her team's skills and understanding of their roles as architects.

She's also been participating in a commissioning program with Petram/EMI, exploring how our understanding of faith and theology shapes the way we approach architecture and service.

Impact isn't always a dramatic story you can point to. Sometimes it's a young architect learning how to lead a project. A team gaining confidence. A skill being passed on. A building slowly taking shape.

The hope is that the impact lasts far beyond the projects themselves!

What if work and worship were never meant to be separate?

We often divide our lives into two categories:
Sacred: prayer, church, ministry
Ordinary: emails, meetings, drawings, deadlines

But the Bible offers a different story. In the Old Testament, the word avad is used 289 times and is translated as "serve," "work," and "worship."

Oftentimes we think of work as a curse, as toil. But, before work became toil, work was good. Genesis 2:15 says this: “The Lord God took man and put him in the garden of Eden to work and to keep it.” God’s intention for a perfect relationship was for it to be a working relationship, and Adam and Eve had specific work in the garden.

And yet, this good story took a turn. In Every Good Endeavor (a book that has been transformative for how we understand work), Tim Keller and Katherine Leary Alsdorf unpack that in a world affected by sin, work can become fruitless, pointless, selfish, and ultimately, the way we work and react to our work reveals the idols that have captured our hearts.

But despite the twists and turns, this story has a good and beautiful ending: The hope we have in Jesus is that work can be redeemed. As image-bearers of a active and working God, we get to partner with God in creating, restoring, reconciling, and cultivating what is good in any and all aspects of our lives. Even the most ordinary work can be part of this story of redemption.

One practical step you can take today: pray first. Before a meeting, a design, or a conversation with a client, we begin by inviting God to be with us in our work. Prayer helps us remember that the work belongs to our Creator, and that even our most mundane tasks can be opportunities to create alongside him.

That is what avad means: we can stop dividing our lives between work and worship. When our work is offered to God, with faithfulness, obedience, perseverance, and prayer, the ordinary becomes sacred. Our work becomes service. And our service becomes worship.

Field Spotlight: Bonnie!

What does leading architecture in the field actually look like? Meet Bonnie — she's been deep in it overseas for months, and we wanted to give you a real look at what "leading architecture in the field" actually looks like day-to-day.

For the past several months, Bonnie has been leading a team of 2 architects, 3 junior architects, and a rotating group of interns. Her last set of interns recently finished their time with the team, and this week she welcomed a brand new intern all the way from Japan!

Her own workload is split across some heavy lifts. She's doing construction administration on the Handa project — work she describes as challenging, because it demands an incredibly close eye on nearly everything happening on-site! Even so, she's found it deeply fulfilling, and she's thankful for the opportunity to be part of it. Alongside that, she's involved with ICF, a church project in Siem Reap spanning over 8,000 square meters.

It's not glamorous work. It's early mornings, tight oversight, and constant problem-solving on-site — but it's exactly the kind of faithful, unseen work that gets buildings built and communities served!

In our final week of Summer Studio, we were honored to hear from Randy Holmes, 100 Fold’s Board Chair, Principal Emeritus, and past president of Glavé & Holmes Architecture. Randy shared wisdom from his many years of service and leadership, and we were grateful for the opportunity to learn from his experience.

Randy also delivered a wonderful homily at our Summer Studio Graduation, a beautiful night of fellowship and reflection on the student's work and growth this summer.

Design conversations are moving forward!

Our architecture team met virtually with the Young Life team at Pico Escondido to review the design, gather feedback, and make updates as the project moves into the permitting process.

We’re excited to continue working alongside the Young Life team and help bring this vision one step closer to reality!

Week 6 was a celebration of all that has happened over the past six weeks!

From final lectures with Randy Holmes to graduation, a celebration dinner, and saying our goodbyes, we closed out Summer Studio by reflecting on how much these students have grown, learned, and been shaped along the way.

Now, they are being sent into schools, workplaces, and communities, carrying what they have learned and serving wherever they are called.

Though we will miss them, we’re excited to witness how God continues to write their stories! 🎉

Summer Studio Week 5 Recap

It has been exciting to see the all ways the Lord has continued to work within the lives of our students this summer. As we wrap up our final weeks of the program, we trust that He will continue to guide and lead them as they are sent back out into their various schools and workplaces!

Last week, our Summer Studio students enjoyed exploring Glacier National Park. Some highlights included: seeing mountain goats on the Hidden Lake Overlook trail, jumping into Lake McDonald, and driving down the Going to the Sun Road at sunset!
