This is why you DON’T bury old concrete steps underneath a new deck. It will always come back to bite someone eventually.

We started removing the existing deck and uncovered these old concrete steps that had simply been built over and forgotten about. Once they came out, we found years of trapped moisture, dirt, organic material, and deterioration hidden against the house.

What looked like a straightforward deck/step project quickly turned into uncovering an area that now needs to be properly evaluated, repaired, sealed, and protected before anything new goes back over it.

This is one of those situations where doing something the “easy way” years ago just transfers the problem — and the bill — to the next homeowner or contractor.

Demo is often where the real story of a property gets told.
Remove what shouldn’t be there.
Expose the problem.
Fix it correctly.

Then build it back so the next guy doesn’t have to fix your shortcut.

That’s the Well Done way.

Fuel, fuel, fuel… it’s killing all of us.

This morning’s dump ticket is a perfect example of what small businesses are dealing with right now:

Disposal: $484.07
Fuel surcharge: $49.62
Total: $533.69

That’s a fuel surcharge equal to more than 10% of the actual disposal cost — before we even account for the diesel it takes to load the truck, haul the material there, and get back to the job.

These have easily been two of the most difficult years I’ve experienced in business. Between rising fuel costs, tariffs, material increases, insurance, wages, equipment costs, and inflation seemingly touching everything we purchase, containing costs has become nearly impossible.

We work incredibly hard to stay efficient and avoid simply passing every increase along to our customers, but eventually the math is the math. When nearly every vendor and supplier adds another 5%, 10%, or 20%, those increases compound throughout an entire project.

This isn’t about complaining — it’s about showing people where the money actually goes.

A $50 surcharge here.
Another increase at the supply yard.
More at the fuel pump.
Higher insurance.
Higher equipment and repair costs.

Multiply that across hundreds of jobs throughout a season, and it becomes tens of thousands of dollars.

Small businesses aren't necessarily charging more because they're making more. In many cases, we're charging more simply trying to keep up with what it costs to stay in business.

We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: work hard, operate smarter, provide a great product, and fight like hell to keep moving forward.

That’s the Well Done way.

Quick correction from our video! 💧

In the clip, we referenced the pump as moving 6,000 GPM — the correct rating is 6,000 GPH (gallons per hour).

The bigger takeaway is how this drainage solution combines both active and passive water management.

💧 Active drainage: The 6,000 GPH pump actively removes accumulated water when levels rise.

🌱 Passive drainage: Underground storage, natural infiltration, gravity flow, and the overflow water garden continue managing water without relying entirely on mechanical equipment.

The goal isn't to eliminate water — it's to control where it goes, how it is stored, and how safely it leaves the area.

Collect. Store. Infiltrate. Pump. Overflow.

Building redundancy into a drainage system gives the property multiple layers of protection when groundwater and heavy rainfall become a problem.

That’s the Well Done way — solve the problem, not just the symptom. 💪💧
