Smart Yard is looking for a fulltime seasonal Lawn Care Application Specialist. Candidate will need to be a professional, motivated employee with the ability to interface with customers, answer questions and diagnose turf problems. We are looking for a conscientious and meticulous applicator. The technician will be expected to walk the property, assess possible issues and speak to customers and potential customers with respect and a broad base of knowledge. Flexible hours, plenty of freedom, competitive pay, 401k, possibility of bonuses based on both productivity and quality of work, and the ability to grow and advance in the company. We are a very small company run by a turf specialist. Our reputation rides on the applicator doing a complete and thorough job.

Duties include: Mixing and loading of fertilizer and pesticides, using both ride-on spreader/sprayer application equipment as well as manual, record keeping, equipment maintenance, operating blowers and other small engine implements. Applicants must have the ability to lift 75lbs. Past experience with lawn care equipment, especially Turfco T3000 or 3100 applicators is a plus. Golf course or sports turf background also helpful. Employee will be trained to identify turf species and w**ds, as well as diagnose disease, insect and abiotic stresses. A driver's license is required. Minnesota pesticide applicators license in categories A and E, or the ability to obtain, also required.

It's vole damage time again! Don't worry, generally the turf will grow back quickly once growing temps are reached. Once your turf firms up, just rake out the dead material so the light can reach the crowns and you'll be surprised how much comes back. Rarely do you need to seed.

Here are a couple DIY tips to avoid striping your yard. 1) use a broadcast spreader, not a drop spreader 2) don't open the spreader gate until you are moving, and shut it before stopping 3) cut your rate by 1/4 and throw from wheel track to wheel track, then do the lawn again at a 90 degree angle

If the lawn gets a little shaggy, be sure to take the extra couple minutes to raise the mowing height. Scalped lawns will not recover well once the heat and humidity set in. Plus, excess clippings left on the lawn can block sunlight and damage turf as well.

We are starting to see some Crabgrass in the Twin Cities. Look for it along curbs and anywhere you have bare soil. Even if a pre emergent was used, you can expect some breakthrough. It can be controlled more easily at early stages so be sure to be ready, or ensure your provider includes post emergent Crabgrass control in your program.
