Be careful about the contractor you choose. There will be red flags. Here are a few of them in our industry.
1.) Charging by linear foot.
This suggests that you are just another number. The contractor has placed a one-size-fits-all approach to every project. They likely have not seen the site, and if an unforeseeable occurs, they will raise the price or cut corners to avoid incurring extra costs. You are their factory line.
2.) Charging $30-42 per linear foot.
The cost of Cedar is high. Based on our climate, Redwood or Cedar should be the only wood you use to build a fence. If they are charging these prices, it's likely they are using pre-treated materials to build your fence or rustic-grade cedar that is low quality and has many imperfections. Either way, I'm 100% sure your fence will be falling over or twisting within the first year. Your fence is supposed to protect you and provide peace of mind. It shouldn't be a hazard.
3.) No social media or Google presence.
People who are proud of their work will show the world. Do your due diligence and check if the company has a website, Google reviews, or some type of online presence. If they don't, they are likely new to the game or they want to stay "under the radar." Either way, how comfortable would you feel hiring them?
4.) A good contractor has a warranty.
People who take pride in their work and focus on quality will guarantee their work. This is kind of self-explanatory.
5.) Uniforms.
People will know you're legit when your company shows up in a uniform looking sharp. If a contractor doesn't care how their company is perceived, then I guarantee they don't care about your fence.
6.) Licenses, insurance, etc.
Self-explanatory.
