Scary energy bills can damper the holiday we all love - Halloween! So we've listed our top tips for saving energy and having fun this Halloween.

• Make an energy-themed Halloween costume:
Brighten the party with the homemade, efficient solar panel costume we featured a couple of posts ago. Try covering a cardboard sheet with dark blue or black cellophane, tape down the edges and a grid with duct tape, then hang it around your neck or over your shoulders using string. Make it a combination costume and have a friend dress up as the sun and another dress up as a lightbulb!

• Energize your Halloween decorations with LED Lights:
Not only do LED holiday lights consume less electricity, they also are safer, sturdier, longer lasting, and easy to install. Did you know that ENERGY STAR rated products use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting?

• Protect yourself from evil spirits - the higher energy bill:
There's no question that energy bills can be truly frightening. Luckily, there are ways to defend yourself. Use outdoor solar lighting to keep the path for trick-or-treaters well-lit without adding extra cost to your electricity bill. You can also make sure warm air stays in your house - and you keep ghosts from flying in - by meeting your trick-or-treaters outside so you don't keep opening and shutting your door.

• Leave the car at home:
Try trick-or-treating in your local neighborhood. This way, you'll reduce carbon emissions, save money, and get to know your neighbors!
