Scouts arriving this week for the 2022 camp season at the Bashore Scout Reservation will be using facilities at the Upper Shower House for the last time. Following the closing of this year’s camp season, the existing shower house will be demolished, and construction of a new modern facility with 10 individual shower/restrooms will begin. Design services for this project were donated by Hammel Associates and Robert R. Desmarais, PE in support of the PA Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and construction services will be provided by Arthur Funk and Sons.

Hammel Associates Architects is proud to announce that our project at the Columbia Market House has earned the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County 2021 C. Emlen Urban Award for Community Revitalization.

Since 2017, the Market has been closed to the public. This rehabilitation and renovation project has restored the formerly closed facility, taking it back to its original use as a fresh food market. The Market House now features 22 market stands and a new restaurant as an anchor tenant within the 8,500 SF space. This redevelopment is the result of a partnership between CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Columbia Borough to both restore the market building and provide local residents with healthy food options within walking distance of their homes. The Market House also serves as a community space for residents to gather, host informational lectures and receptions, and celebrate special occasions.

The beloved original brick floor was removed for safety and cleanliness, salvaged and selectively reinstalled in prominent areas, paying homage to the original market. New market stands were constructed, inspired by details of the original stands, and interior screen walls were designed to recall the intricate design of the roof trusses.

Exterior restoration included the reconstruction of the original timber frame roof overhang on the North facade, masonry restoration, window and door repairs, roof repairs, new lighting and signage. The roof overhang will provide a covered area for stands when the market extends outside during periodic street closures of Sadie Lane.

Congratulations to the project team and Lancaster community for the outstanding achievement!

Hammel Associates Architects is proud to announce that our project at the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church has earned the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County 2021 C. Emlen Urban Award for Preservation as an excellent example of adaptively reusing a historic church building for use as a modern worship space, while respecting and retaining the original historic character, a challenge that is facing many historic Lancaster County churches today.
This project began with a feasibility study and schematic design, exploring options, to expand and simplify the existing sanctuary to allow greater flexibility during worship. Those options led to a project that included a comprehensive renovation of their existing sanctuary, which was completed in time for a celebratory service on Easter Sunday.

The two additions flanking the main entry provide a fully accessible restroom and a mother’s room. The additions were constructed of locally sourced field stone to match the existing historic masonry and included an authentic slate roof. Original stained glass windows were removed from the side facades of the entry to create new door openings, and relocated to the exterior of the new additions to preserve the character of the original church, while simultaneously providing the necessary privacy within the new spaces.

The sanctuary renovation, completed in collaboration with Arthur Funk & Sons, Inc., retained the existing pews, restored the original dramatic painted ceiling and re-opened the choir loft while completely re-designing the chancel area. The original chancel design featured multiple levels and built in elements which severely limited the use of the space. By providing an accessible, open and flexible space, the church is able to incorporate a variety of worship styles, musical groups and other performances, while remaining within their beloved church sanctuary.
