In a food plant, the second call is the real review. We finished the stainless dust collection ductwork and these two 170-inch roof stacks for a pet food plant in June. Since then, the plant has called us back for several smaller projects.

This is the new floor inside a 62,000-pound gas turbine inlet silencer. Our crew weld-repaired the badly corroded floor steel, then protected it with 10-gauge 304 stainless steel cladding and Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy 646 epoxy. All 26 baffles went back exactly where they came from.

Up goes one of two 304 stainless steel exhaust stacks our shop built for a pet food plant's new dust collection system. Each stack is 42-1/8 inches in diameter and 170 inches tall. The full job used 45,500 pounds of 304 stainless, and every stainless weld followed AWS D1.6, the welding code for stainless steel structures.

One crew, start to finish. On a gas turbine silencer repair in Virginia, the same four GSM team members handled the rigging, welding, coating, stainless cladding, insulation, and cleanup. "We didn't have to bring in a separate rigging crew, a welding crew, a coating crew, or additional specialists every time the job changed gears," said account manager Matthew Huntington.

Each of these roof penetrations runs down to one of four dryers in a pet food plant, and every tie-in had to happen while that dryer was down. Over 12 weeks on site, the outage dates moved more than once. Our crew never missed one.

Rust that breaks loose inside a gas turbine's inlet silencer heads straight for the compressor. For Envanio at a Virginia power plant, our crew rigged a 62,000-pound silencer down from nearly 45 feet, repaired its corroded floor, and protected it with 304 stainless steel cladding and epoxy. Four people did it in one mobilization and finished a day ahead of schedule.

Thank you to Senator James Malone for joining us during MANTEC’s MFG U camp. Hosting rising seniors in our shop is one of the best parts of the summer. These students got to see structural fabrication, welding, and pressure vessel work up close, and to hear from the people who do it every day. The trades are a career, not a fallback, and the next generation of fabricators is standing right in front of us.

Ever seen ductwork big enough to walk through?

Our team is building a 110-inch diameter bypass duct for a cement plant: 300 feet of carbon steel, 70 tons in all. When it's installed, the top of the run will sit 200 feet off the ground.

The trickiest part is a fitting called a grasshopper elbow. It's too big to build in one piece, so the crew fabricated it in halves and test-fit them together right here on the shop floor, making sure everything lined up perfectly before it ships to the field.

Fabrication's done and installation is underway. Another one built start to finish by the GSM crew. 🔨

A change at the top at GSM Industrial.

Mike Towers is the new President of GSM Industrial. His father, Jim Towers, grew GSM Industrial out of GSM Roofing and led the company for more than forty years. Mike represents the third generation of family leadership at GSM.

Brian Dombach, who led GSM for more than a decade, has transitioned to Executive Chairman and stays actively involved with the business.
