This one is close to home. We hate seeing it, and happy no one was injured.

Chimney inspections save lives.

On Thursday, December 18 at 0342 hours, the Allamuchy Fire Department was requested to respond mutual aid to Frelinghuysen Township for a reported working structure fire.

Chief 91, Engine 91-61, Ladder 91-69, Tanker 91-71, and Utility 91-84 responded upon dispatch. Upon arrival, Tanker 91-71 was assigned to establish water supply for Green Township’s engine positioned in the driveway. Personnel from Engine 91-61 and Ladder 91-69 were assigned to assist crews operating on the fireground.

Allamuchy crews assisted with fire suppression and overhaul operations, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. Units operated on scene for approximately one and a half hours before being released.

So saddened when I see yet another potentially preventable loss! Please have your chimneys inspected!

Miami Nation Police Chief Abel Stose has released the names of the two people who died in Thursday’s fire.

Benny Green, 72, and Nikki Tipton, 30, died at their residence at 8201 S. 590 Rd. in Commerce. Because Tipton was a member of the Cherokee Nation, the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives (ATF) was called in to help with the investigation.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. on Thursday and firefighters arrived at the scene approximately seven minutes later, he said. The house was fully engulfed by fire five minutes after the first call came out, Stose said.

Stose said a preliminary investigation shows the fire started in the chimney attached to a wood-burning stove. Both were upstairs in the two-story 1930s wooden farmhouse. Read the full story in today's Miami News-Record.

In my 31 full time years as a chimney professional and 12 years as a litigation support expert, I have never seen the cause of an incident be “overloading “ of a fireplace. However, the articles most important point is HAVE AN ANNUAL INSPECTION
