Alders have a bad rap, mostly due to the tension stored in the wood from phototropism, thing of a bean stalk growing and bending for the light.
Knowing how to safely cut them to direct their fall is key. Second photo shows a ‘near’ barber chair where the trunk tries to split vertically which can be a deadly situation. Just out of frame we took precautions of binding the trunk.
The last frame show a bore cut that didn’t go as planned, it’s always good to be proactive and not ‘dawg’ in if you feel there is a slight chance of getting pinched. We did so and were able to pull the saws power head off and finish the release cut.

Haba snag I made sometime around 2018/20. The Garry oak was being shades from the west and larger firs on the east slowed its growth. So this noodly Douglas fir was chosen for removal and I advocated to leave a habitat snag. I don’t get why more don’t leave snags, nor get creative with them. It’s a fun challenge to make it fit in the landscape as a natural feature vs a bare trunk and a flat top or ‘bart Simpson’ haircut effort.

Weirdest light phase slug ever, super rad uprooted rerooted (?) original growth western red cedar over seasonal creek in the Maxwelton watershed. Meters away from where multiple creeks converge into Quade creek, all unnamed or undocumented. Trying to protect the upland water source from a logging project.

Gonna need to soak my hands after these two. Phase 2 converting from closed sheared form Nawiki inspired to open form. They are coming along, and always hesitant to go too hard/too fast.
