🌿 Happy Labor Day from DEL! 🌿

Today we celebrate the hard work, grit, and dedication that built our communities — from the people who paved roads and raised homes to those who plant trees, restore habitats, and shape the landscapes we live in. 💪

Labor Day is more than just the unofficial end of summer — it’s a reminder that every shovel in the dirt, every wheelbarrow hauled, every drain line fixed, and every prairie restored adds up to something bigger: strong families, thriving neighborhoods, and healthier environments.

So fire up the grill, enjoy time with friends and family, and take pride in the work you do. Because real progress — just like great landscapes — is built one step at a time.

🌿 RACCOON APPROVED 🦝🌳Woodland Habitat Restoration + Erosion Control in Delafield, WI 🌿

In SE WI, we recently completed a woodland restoration and erosion control project that highlights what happens when ecological integrity and land usability go hand in hand. Watch for Supervisor .

✅ 108 native woodland perennials
✅ 28 native shrubs for structure and diversity
✅ Biodegradable silt socks to stabilize steep woodland slopes
✅ Wildlife-first design for bird habitat, pollinator support, and long-term soil retention

This particular client already enjoys visits from bluebirds, orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, and pileated woodpeckers—not to mention deer, turkeys, and a symphony of insects. By restoring degraded woodland edges and reinforcing steep slopes with native root systems, we’re not just keeping the hillside in place—we’re expanding usable space and building a resilient, living system.

🌱 Insects are the foundation—feeding birds, pollinating native plants, and balancing pest populations. By planting for them, we plant for the entire ecosystem.

📈 And here’s the kicker: well-designed native habitats like this increase property value by transforming formerly eroding or unused areas into ecologically functional, low-maintenance, and beautiful woodland edges.

We’re not just landscaping—we’re landscaping with intelligence.

The Rusty Patched Bumble Bee was officially listed as endangered in 2017, making it the first bee in the continental US to receive such protection. Major threats that have led to the decline of this Bumble Bee are:
• Habitat degradation
• Insecticide use
• Pathogens spread by commercial bumble bee rearing
It gives us purpose when our customers report finding Rusty Patched Bumble Bees in their native plantings! We have a list of their favorite species as well as identification information here:

Plant what they prefer, and they will come. This photo of a Rusty Patched Bumble Bee on Agastache scrophulariifolia was provided by our customer Kristin Lee.

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is a plant that is commonly found invading and taking over wetlands. It originally made its way to North America in the 1800s, and unfortunately since then it has invaded just about every state of the USA. Purple Loosestrife quickly overwhelms wetlands and creates a monoculture. The lack of native plant diversity in its wake sadly means detriment to many already at risk amphibians and insects.

IDENTIFICATION:
Each Purple Loosestrife flower has five to seven petals, and the stems are square. Its leaves sit in pairs opposite of each other on the stem, and have smooth edges. This plant typically thrives in areas with wet soil or shallow water. It blooms from early July through September, and stands at a height of 3-7’.

PREVENTION & CONTROL:
Purple Loosestrife seed can germinate successfully for up to twenty years, or twenty months if submerged in water. Be sure to thoroughly clean boats, canoes, kayaks, and other water vessels before transporting them to different bodies of water as this is how Purple Loosestrife commonly spreads.
Plants can be pulled, but be sure not to leave behind root fragments. Pulling plants may not be the best control method, as pulling can disturb the soil and cause more seeds to germinate. Any pulled plants should be dried and burned, or bagged up and discarded in the trash.
Typically chemical control methods are more successful than manually pulling plants. Be sure to do your research about appropriate chemicals before applying them near open water. Do not over broadcast herbicide, as it can kill beneficial plants. The Minnesota DNR has several articles about Purple Loosestrife control that are very helpful.
Interestingly, the most successful Purple Loosestrife removal tactic has been biological control. Galerucella Beetles, introduced to the US in 1994, have done a great job at controlling Purple Loosestrife with their appetites. These specialist beetles forage exclusively on Purple Loosestrife and either move on to new populations of the plant or die when the supply runs out. If you’d like to help raise and release Galerucella Beetles, contact your DNR or university extension to see if such programs exist in your area.
