I recently went to a customers house who was looking to back feed his panel with a new generator he had bought.
After opening the main panel cover I seen that there was no more space for adding breakers. So to accommodate making space in the existing panel for the generator back feed, I consolidated four 15 Amp Breaker’s on the right side to two tandem 15 Amp Breaker’s and moved the 2 pole 30 Amp breaker from the top left side over to the top right.
This allowed me to install the 2 pole 30 Amp generator breaker on the top left side of this panel. Once all the circuits where in the correct spots I was able to run the wire for the generator inlet and wire both the inlet box and 2 Pole Breaker in the panel.
Then I layed out the Mechanical Interlock switch for the panel cover and drilled and mounted it in place. Since this panel was a older “Hump” style main breaker you can see that the Mechanical Interlock switch is way thicker than a normal one.
Once again everything was wired correctly and they will be ready for the next storm or emergency!!!

Yesterday I got a call from a customer about a burnt up microwave outlet in their kitchen.
They told me that “the outlet looked like it was burning up and melting” and that “ it has a burning smell when using the microwave, so they unplugged it and turned the circuit off.”
So upon arriving and pulling the faceplate off I noticed how melted the outlet prongs and the side of the whole outlet was. The insulation on the wire had began to melt and was completely bare two inches beyond the device.
So after repairing the wire and reinstalling a new outlet, they where back up and running!!!
Although it may not seem like a big deal, it could have resulted in a electrical fire and possibly to a house fire. In America, 18-20% of all house fires are caused by electrical systems. All this to say, if you see something that doesn’t look right or if you smell something burning then STOP USING IT, turn the circuit off and call a electrician to come fix it. Please for your own safety and for your family, it’s better to know you are safe then to have to second guess it!
Just remember, only YOU can prevent House Fires!!!

Got the opportunity to install a 50 Amp Generator Inlet with a Mechanical Interlock at a main panel last week. That way when a storm hits and they are out of power, they can plug in their generator to back feed their house. By having a Mechanical Interlock it will safely provide power to the panel without back feeding onto the grid and being dangerous for utility workers. The safest way for both the home owner and Lineman working to restore power!!!

Last week, I posted a couple stories here about panels I have recently seen and the various code violations and problems within them.
This Sub Panel in particular had multiple circuits running to one breaker, ground and neutral wires bonded together (not separated as they should be in a sub panel), and was completely maxed out not allowing for any addition circuits to be added.
I had the pleasure of replacing this 100 Amp 20 Space/40 Circuit Sub Panel with a new 100 Amp 30 Space/60 Circuit Sub Panel. I dismantled the old panel. Identified and pulled every circuit out of the old panel. Mounted new plywood and the new larger panel. Isolated the grounds and neutrals so they where no longer bonded together. Eliminated all doubled tapped breakers by giving each breaker a dedicated circuit and extended all circuits as needed to corresponding breakers.

Please give us a call If you have a panel or sub panel that you would like to have replaced, upgraded or looked at for any reason.

This job right here combined two passions I have in life. One being ELECTRIC WORK and the second being CROSSFIT!!!
A returning customer, wanted to add a outdoor LED light to brighten up their CrossFit rig so when their workouts ran into dusk/night they could still finish them, without being stuck doing it in the dark.
Although it wasn’t a overly complicated job, we where glad to add a circuit to their existing electrical system for them.
We started off by running stranded wire in conduit (that was already installed) from light switch to junction box, and Romex from junction box to the outdoor light. Then we mounted and wired up the LED outdoor light that the customer had purchased. After that, we replaced the existing single pole switch with a combination switch. That way that the top switch would control a existing outdoor light and the bottom switch would operate the newly installed LED outdoor light as needed. The light also had built in photocell and motion sensor controls so that it can operate by night time or by motion.
JOB COMPLETE!!! AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!! Thankfully they didn’t make me hit a WOD (workout off the day) before leaving for the night! 😂

Recently we got a call from a Real Estate company that needed our help to quickly troubleshoot and repair any electrical issues in the garage and in the pole barn out back. We where told that “all the garage lights aren’t working, one of the garage doors won’t open, and there is nothing working within the pole barn out back. And that they needed to be rectified for the sale of the house to go through.”
After arriving and troubleshooting their electrical system we found multiple problems:
1) There was a loose connection in the wall switch controlling the garage lights that needed to be repaired.
2) Every lightbulb needed to be replaced in the garage.
3) The garage door opener outlet(s) were poorly wired and “stabbed” in the back, rather than putting the wires around the proper screws. Resulting in the outlet arcing in the box and the outlet needing to be replaced/not supplying power to the next outlet.
4) Poor wire splices in the pole barn that needed to be remade.
After repairing all those little problems, they once again had the garage and pole barn Illuminated and back to proper working order. Glad we where able to help get this deal through and settlement didn’t get pushed back at all.
All this to say,it pays to hire a electrician who knows what he’s doing!!!
