🟠 What is Thatch?
Thatch is a packed layer of dead roots and leaves that builds up faster than it can decompose into the ground. It’s normal for your lawn to have thatch, in fact it’s a good thing! It increases tolerance for cold and hot temperatures, it reduces soil compression, and also can reduce water loss.

🟠 When is It an Issue?
A dense layer of thatch is not so good though. It prevents water, nutrients, and air circulation from getting to the base of the plant. As the thatch builds up to an unhealthy level, new grass roots can no longer reach the dirt to get their nutrients.
