Once ignitions are finished you put the drip torch down and become a spectator for a minute or two. Eventually the head fire meets the backing fire, all fuel is consumed and the Rx fire puts itself out.

Spring is a great time to plant bare root saplings. This is how we do it with a tree spade shovel.

INVASIVE PLANT SPOTLIGHT - Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) is infamous for its ability to spread rapidly and create monoculture. Once established, the stem density eventually becomes so thich, a monoculture is the end result. Non-native plant monocultures destroy natural habitat. Natural habitats can only thrive with native biodiversity.

The white circles are mature trees from one adjoining neighbor. The red rectangle is an area infested with Callery pear only 3 seasons after the other neighbor stopped mowing behind their barn!

The picture was taken while we were mowing a prairie as part of annual maintenance. Burning this prairie is not an option due to close proximity to the neighbors. Mowing each spring closely mimics fires ability to consume dead vegetation from the previous growing season. Additional maintenance of this created natural habitat requires fall cutting and treating of Callery pear, along with other invasive tree and shrub species. During the growing season, we are currently foliar spraying 3 species of non-native thistles and common mugwort (Artemisia vulgare).

Growing season pictures of the managed prairie and the beautiful native wildflowers within it are in the comments.

NATIVE HIGHLIGHT

We would like to highlight a native woodland plant known as Round Lobed Hepatica (Hepatica americana or Anemone americana).

This guy is an early bloomer perennial (February-May), so it it great food source for our early risers (i.e. bees, flies, beetles and overwintering Leptoptera). Unfortunately like most spring wildflowers, the blooms are fleeting. One could easily miss the blooming period for hepaticas, especially with how low to the ground the plant grows.

It has a close relative known as Sharp Lobed Hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba or Anemone acutiloba). Hepaticas belong to the Buttercup (Ranunculaceae) Family. Leaves can stay green throughout winter and the flowers are blue, purple, or white in color.

This is a great addition to any woodland garden.

Below are photos of Round Lobed Hepatica blooming earlier this spring.

This gnarly tip-up blocking a hiking trail persuaded us to dust off Ol Gassy, the single remaining gas powered tool in our hand-held equipment cache.

Could our battery saws have done the job? Absolutely!
Would that be pushing the limits of a battery saw? For sure!

A few pics of a sign we designed months ago and installed yesterday. The sign highlights the physical characteristics that separate butterflies, moths and skippers. Information relative to the significant relationships species have with native plants, some amazing migrations and unique life cycles were also included to help educate those who visit this pollinator garden.

Approximately 142 million acres of prairie habitat once existed in the United States. Today less than 4% of that remains. One of the most fulfilling things we get to do is bring a little of that back! Aside from our natural area restoration work and invasive plant control, some of our clients have asked us to convert portions of their turfgrass into function and beautiful prairie habitat. The maintenance of these created natural areas primarily involves control of invasive species and periodical mowing. Today we were controlling invasive thistles and mugwort, and the prairies are starting to put on their seasonal show!

If you're sick of mowing or tired of looking at boring, sterile grass, then contact us to convert your turf to a beautiful habitat that would be an oasis to birds, insects, and wildlife.
