🦝 It's Raccoon Kit Season!🦝
Have you been spotting more raccoons around your property lately? You're not alone!
Late spring and early summer are peak times for raccoons to raise their kits. During this time, female raccoons are busy searching for safe, sheltered places to care for their young and unfortunately, attics, chimneys, sheds, and crawl spaces often make the perfect nursery.

A few things to keep in mind:
🐾 Seeing a raccoon out during the day doesn't automatically mean it's sick. Raccoons often venture out during daylight hours to find food for their growing kits.
🐾 If you hear scratching, thumping, or chattering noises in your attic, there may be a raccoon family nearby.
🐾 Never attempt to remove a mother raccoon or her kits yourself. Separating them can create bigger problems and may leave young animals stranded.

If you suspect raccoons have moved into your home or outbuilding, it's best to have the situation professionally inspected to ensure the animals can be removed safely.

Did you know LaPorte County is home to several rare and protected species? From the Indiana Bat to the Eastern Massasauga and Blanding’s Turtle, these animals play an important role in keeping our ecosystems healthy.💚
Many endangered species are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and human activity but awareness and conservation efforts can make a difference.

🌿🐾 What’s Happening This Month in Wildlife – April Edition! 🐾🌿

Spring is here, and that means kit season is in full swing! 🌸 This month, you may start noticing more wildlife activity around your home—and chances are, it’s because proud moms are raising their young nearby.

👀 Who to watch for this month:
• 🦝 Raccoons – nesting in attics, chimneys, and crawl spaces with their kits
• 🐿️ Squirrels – busy raising kits in trees and sometimes inside homes
• 🐺 Coyotes – caring for pups and becoming more protective of their territory
• 🐾 Opossums – carrying tiny joeys in their pouches
• 🐰 Rabbits – nesting in yards, often hidden in grass or landscaping
• 🦫 Beavers & Muskrats – raising kits near ponds, lakes, and waterways

⚠️ What this means for you:
During this time, wildlife may be more active, more visible, and more defensive than usual. If you hear scratching, chirping, or movement in your home, it could be a mother and her kits. If you come across a nest or kits, it’s best to keep your distance.
