Choosing an exterior wall system is about more than aesthetics.

Architects must also consider energy performance, long-term durability, maintenance requirements, and how the system will perform over the life of the building.

Our latest blog explores why EIFS continues to be a popular choice for commercial projects and the features that make it well suited for a variety of building types.

Does all drywall perform the same?

Not necessarily. Different commercial spaces often call for different types of drywall depending on how they'll be used.

Some common options include:

-Moisture-resistant drywall for high-humidity areas
-Impact-resistant drywall for high-traffic spaces
-Sound-rated drywall for offices, hotels, and educational facilities

Selecting the right product early can help support the long-term performance of the building—not just the finished appearance.

Before it became one of Tampa's most popular waterfront destinations, Sparkman Wharf was a movie theater and retail complex known as Channelside Bay Plaza.

Transforming the space into today's mix of Class A offices, restaurants, retail, and public gathering areas required more than a cosmetic update. Nearly 85% of the building's exterior was reframed to support the new design, followed by new interior framing, drywall, exterior wall systems, and specialty finishes throughout the project.

The result is a vibrant destination that reflects how existing buildings can be reimagined to serve an entirely new purpose.

Hurricane season is a good time to take a closer look at your building's exterior.

Some of the first areas to show signs of wear include:

• Sealants around windows and doors
• Transitions where different materials meet
• Existing cracks in stucco or EIFS
• Areas with previous repairs or moisture issues

These conditions may seem minor during normal weather, but heavy rain and wind can make them worse over time.

Texture is playing a bigger role in commercial building design.

Rather than relying on a single finish across an entire façade, many projects are incorporating a mix of materials and textures to create depth and visual interest. Stucco, EIFS, stone, and specialty finishes can all work together to define entrances, highlight architectural features, and break up large elevations.

When these materials are thoughtfully integrated, they create buildings that feel more dynamic while maintaining a cohesive design.

Transitions between stucco, EIFS, windows, doors, and other building materials influence more than the finished appearance. If they're not detailed and installed properly, these areas are often where issues like cracking, sealant failure, or moisture intrusion first begin.

Seemingly small details at these connection points can have a lasting impact on how a building looks and performs over time; that's why transition points should be carefully evaluated during both design and construction.

Why do so many school construction projects happen during the summer?

Schools have a narrow window to complete renovations before students and staff return. That means framing, drywall, exterior finishes, and other trades often have to work on tight schedules to keep projects moving and classrooms ready for the first day back.

As another school year begins, it's a good reminder of the planning, coordination, and craftsmanship behind the spaces where students learn every day.

For nearly 30 years, St. Stephen Catholic Church worshipped in a temporary facility while plans for a permanent sanctuary remained a long-term goal.

That vision became reality in 2017 with the completion of a new campus designed to serve a growing congregation while honoring the church's identity and history.

In our latest project spotlight, we take a closer look at the architecture, craftsmanship, and planning behind this award-winning project.
