Boulders set. Fabric down. Ground graded.

Before a planting bed, a path or a patio goes in, the edge has to be right. Heavy stone sets the line, and graded ground gives everything after it something solid to sit on.

Before a patio, a wall or a lawn goes in, the work that matters most is the work nobody sees.

This week our crew was running underground lines: fittings set, lines laid, clean stone around them so the ground stays solid and the system lasts. It isn't the glamorous part of a project. It's the part that decides how the finished project holds up years from now.

Every build starts on prepared ground.

Before a slab is poured or a building goes up, the ground has to be right. That means the pad cut to grade, the base compacted, and water directed away. Get it wrong and every trade after you pays for it.

Our crew does that work: building pads, grading, drainage and site prep for garages, pole buildings, outbuildings and patios.

Find the joint.

Yesterday this wall ended in a staircase, three courses stepping down into bare gray. Today it's one continuous run and you cannot find where we stopped.

The steps weren't sloppiness. They were teeth. End a stone wall in a straight vertical line and you've built a seam; and a seam is forever. So you rack the edge back and leave the next section something to knit into.

Watch the pink lines on the gray wall behind him. Chalk, snapped level by hand, one for every course. A poured foundation is never truly level. The line is.

The wall lies. The line doesn't.

One step at a time. 🌾

When this home was handed over, the front entry was a bare concrete stoop and a pile of fill, functional, but not exactly a welcome.

Swipe through and watch it change over the past few days. Compacted base. Block by block. Tread by tread. A wide, cascading stair system with a proper landing that turns "the back door" into an entrance worth walking up.

No shortcuts under the surface, either. Everything you see is sitting on properly prepped and compacted base, because the part nobody photographs is the part that decides whether it still looks like this in ten years.

This is what we do; take the leftover, unfinished spaces around a brand-new home and make them the reason people stop and look.
