4 years ago today I arrived in Las Cruces, NM.

I had taken a leap of faith and decided to move across the country to pursue a just-budding relationship with my best friend. We started out in a place where we only knew each other, lived in a cozy apartment, and took adventures in my massive work van.

We now have some wonderful friends here, Alexa Mortenson is working a fulfilling career as a systems engineer, my business has blossomed into a cabinet and woodworking company, we have a house, a shop, and a beautiful pecan orchard.

I’m forever grateful for the support of my family, Alexa and her family, and all of those who welcomed us to Las Cruces.

I designed, built, finished, and installed every piece. The closet includes knotty alder counter tops and library ladder, an integrated ironing board, hidden drawers, hampers, and more.

Knotty Alder staircase completed fall of 2020.

Spiral stair skirt board

•

This past weekend I was tasked with fixing a set of spiral stair which the previous trim carpenters had failed to execute.

•

This was my first time trimming out a spiral staircase and it had many challenges. Firstly the treads were pre-installed and pre-finished. Secondly the walls were and uneven/lumpy textured drywall.

•

I chose to fit each piece to the tread and riser, then rip the top to match my desired slope, and then route in a profile to match the baseboard throughout the house.

•

Then each piece was installed with finish nails, biscuit joined in the each mitered kink (in line with with each riser), and liquid shimmed with PL premium.

•

I also paid close attention to the transitions to the baseboard at the top and bottom. What do you think?
