TPO vs PVC: Which Roof Membrane is Best for Your Building?
Choosing the right single-ply membrane is critical for roof performance and longevity. The two most commonly used single ply membranes in the SoCal market are TPO and PVC. So, what’s the difference?

Similarities:
TPO and PVC both look the same on your roof, at least when they’re new. Both systems can be mechanically fastened or adhered in place, can be installed with or without insulation and are heat-welded at the seams.

TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin):
Pros: Energy efficient, cost-effective, heat-weldable seams, no chemical reaction to asphalt exposure.
Cons: Less flexible and durable than PVC, ponding water can cause premature failure.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):
Pros: Excellent chemical resistance, strong seams, reflective, handles ponding water
Cons: Higher cost, damaged by contact with asphaltic materials.

The experienced Project Managers at Costa Roofing can help you choose the best membrane for your building’s climate, use, and budget.
