CLEAR YOUR VENTS
**or you can call this guy**

Snow and ice can accumulate and block exterior exhaust vents from heating appliances and dryers, causing dangerous carbon monoxide build up in your home. Please take a few minutes to keep these areas clear from snow and ice during storms. And always make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in working condition, testing them monthly.

This simple step can help prevent emergencies.

**Prepare your home for a winter storm by ensuring your HVAC system can handle extreme cold.

**Keep those cabinets open, that will help to keep some heat in there, and keep faucets dripping, water in motion doesn’t freeze.

* Replace Filter - Immediately replace the air filter, Change Filter: Replace your HVAC filter (30-90 day life) to prevent the blower from overworking.

* Keep Vents Clear - clear snow/debris from the exterior unit and exhaust vents, Clear Vents and registers: Ensure all supply and return vents are unobstructed by furniture or curtains. Ensure the intake/exhaust pipes for high-efficiency furnaces are not blocked by drifting snow to avoid shut-offs.

* Check the Thermostat - check thermostat batteries, Check Thermostat: Test the system, ensure it is set to heat, and replace batteries. Make sure your winter settings are correct, Lower temp while sleeping or away for energy savings. Closing curtains and blinds will help retain heat during the night or when the sun is not shining.

* Test smoke/CO detectors - Safety Checks: Test carbon monoxide detectors. Change batteries, Homes with gas furnaces must check these regularly.

* No clutter around furnace - ensure the area around the furnace is clear of flammable materials. Vacuum dust, pet hair. Ensure 3 feet of clearance around the indoor unit and space heaters.

* Seal drafts around windows and doors - Weather strip doors and windows,
Seal leaks in ductwork to reduce heat loss.

* Ceiling Fans: Set fans to rotate clockwise on low speed to push warm air down.

* Listen for sounds - Grinding - Whistling • Banging, These may indicate mechanical issues. Blue Flame = normal.

* NO FLAMMABLES - No-Heat Plan: Identify safe, non-flammable backup heat sources (e.g., extra blankets) if the system fails. Avoid Hazards: Never use a gas oven, range, or charcoal grill to heat your home.

With winter storm alerts currently stretching a staggering 2,000 miles across central, southern, and northeastern portions of the United States, it's a good time to make sure you know how to operate a generator safely in the event of a power outage. Some safety tips to keep in mind include:

📏 Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home
🏠➡️ Direct generator exhaust away from buildings
🚨 Ensure there are working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home
⛽️ Avoid refueling a generator while it's running or still hot

Preparation is essential for winter storm safety. Knowing what to do before, during, and after a storm can save lives.

Ensure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly with regular monthly tests.

Plan your emergency escape and keep your family ready.

Ensure your house numbers are clearly visible from the street.

Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready for power outages and avoid candles.

Stay updated on weather conditions and assist neighbors who may need help.

Generators should be used outside and kept away from windows.

Be aware of downed wires and report them immediately.

If you lose your primary heating source, use layers to stay warm and keep emergency heat sources at a safe distance.

Always switch off portable heaters when leaving a room or going to bed.
