Checking out the hive to see how much honey we will be harvesting! The bees have drawn out the frames and started capping the honey which is a great sign!

🐝 Ever seen a hive being robbed?! 🍯

This is exactly what is happening here! 👀

Take a look at the entrance. Notice how large it is and how much activity there is around it. That’s one of the first signs something isn’t right.

Now look at the top of the hive. You can see bees gathering and trying to squeeze their way inside. 🐝

Here’s the giveaway: If those bees belonged to this hive, they wouldn’t need to sneak in! 😳

Robbing happens when bees from another colony try to get into a hive and steal its honey. It can happen quickly and can be devastating to a weaker colony. Luckily, this colony is thriving and we found it so we could help.

🐝🍯 Beekeeping isn’t always just about checking for honey. It’s about watching bee behavior and recognizing when something is wrong!

Which way would you put in a new box? On top? Or on bottom? Is there a right or wrong way?? Who knows. 😅 lifting the top box off to put one on the bottom took some 💪 but we will see how it does in the next few weeks!!! Hoping for some drawn out frames so we can have a bountiful harvest this year!!! 🍯🍯🍯

🐝 Hive Update! 🐝

We did a quick inspection of our new hive today. At first glance, everything looked great! But after taking a closer look, we noticed something wasn't quite right.

It appears the hive either has a very new queen who is still getting established, or we have a laying worker. Unfortunately, laying workers can only produce drones (male bees). While drones play an important role by mating with queens, they don't gather nectar, make honey, or help grow the colony like worker bees do.

We'll be keeping a close eye on this hive over the next several days to see if the queen starts laying properly or if the colony needs a little help. Beekeeping is always teaching us something new!

Have you ever seen a hive with a laying worker? Let us know in the comments! 🐝🍯
