Checked the hive today. Bees seem to be doing well. Left some food in the top of the hive. Will go back for the next check in 10 to 14 days.

I poked my head into both hives today. Found sealed brood in both hives which means the queens are doing their jobs.

It is going to get cold again so it will be a few days before I can get out again.

The recent bout of warm weather has allowed me to check on the hives several times. I took off the winter insulation about a week ago, and now it is supposed to get cold again.

I checked both hives in the last two days to see if there is brood. I only found a small amount of brood in one hive. The monthly beekeeping workshop is tomorrow so I can get advice from the instructor on what to do next.

I was planning to split both hives to get a total of four hives but that requires having brood to put in the new hives while leaving brood in the old hive. Hopefully, this issue can get resolved.

Went out to the beehives today. Found two out of three hives seem to be doing OK. Third hive was a deadout.

Put a fresh packet of food in the two good hives. if the weather stays really warm will have to check the hives again soon to make sure the bees don’t burn through the food too quickly.

With the weather getting warmer this week I am planning to do a check of the beehives. It has been too cold since the last time I was out there in December to see what the bees are doing.

It may still be too cold to pop open the hives but on a sunny day in the low 40s the bees should be poking their heads out of the hives. I have some food packets made up in case it does get warm enough to open the hives.

Went out to the bee hives today (12/29/2022). Bees were active out side the hives since the temperature was close to 50 degrees.

Put in more winter food packets to keep the bees going until the next time I get out to check on them.

Last Thursday was the last warm day of the year so I took the opportunity to put packets of winter food in the tops of all three hives. There has been such mild weather until now so the bees will have been active and using up food they have stored. There were active bees in all the hives. Here is hoping the bees make it through the winyer.

Went out to hives today to get them ready for winter weather. They are all wrapped and a box of insulation has been put on top. I also put a mouse guard on the entrance to keep field mice from living in the hive.

Went out to the hives Saturday afternoon to get the mite treatment in them. I am using formic acid pads that I can leave in the hive until the next time I do a major inspection, likely in the spring.

Some adventures with the bees recently. About two weeks ago I moved my three hives from one location to a new one. I could not have done it without the help of Jeff, the local bee guru.

Since the move I have fed the bees and now I need to give them their mite treatment but the treatment I ordered did not arrive in the package with other items. Hopefully it arrives while the weather is still mild enough to open the hives.

Finally got the honey extracted from the first two supers. Now I need to get the supers off the other two hives and get them taken care of.

07/21/2022

Went out to the hives on Wednesday to put the honey supers on all three hives. Good thing I did it now because in two hives the bees were already building comb on top of the frames and putting honey in them.
