GardenStyle with Sara Antin

GardenStyle with Sara Antin Enjoying gardens indoors and out. Sara began her professional design and artist career as a teacher and a private art instructor in her home.

She worked at the Nelson Art Gallery, and was also a Art Teacher at a private school. When Sara's students visited her home for private art lessons, many would comment on how much they loved her gardens, and if she would help them design and create their home gardens. After having so much fun dreaming of and implementing special garden oasis's for friends and students... it clicked: This was the

most rewarding and wonderful career on many levels. The chance to get to work with people on creating a retreat. The opportunity to be outside with nature. The ability to create Garden Vignettes in "real life", was more exciting than creating on a canvas. Sara lives in the Midwest and loves having all the seasons. She lives with her longtime partner Danny and their 2 dogs Oz and Dusty. They also have a Lake Home and enjoy spending weekends on the lake, on their boat, exploring nature. Sara's has two sons:
Garrett, a designer for a prominent design firm in New York City, doing both residential and interior design in New York. Evan, a veterinarian at a clinic in Conejo California, who works with domestic pets and specializes in Exotic Animals. All and all... Sara's family enjoys all aspects of design and nature together.

Whether you are creating a succulent bowl or designing a garden, always think about size, height, shape, texture, and shades of green. It may look just green to some, but the different styles will make such a huge difference!

I love paths in my garden! It allows me to choose repeating patterns and colors to create a beautiful vignette. I also added Butterfly W**d within my Peonies so that it looks like a blooming bush now that the Peony has finished for the season. Add annuals in a continual line along your pathway to create a look that is more grand and to give a continuous bloom of color

A new family member. Miss Tilly. I so enjoy her curiosity. I so don't enjoy her claws. I purchased "Kitty Caps" that come with a liquid adhesive that you apply directly on her claws. They have been wonderful. No pulls on the upholstered furniture. No pulls on the screen door. And bonus! They look so darn cute!!

This particular "Hope" Philodenron has been with me for a number of years. I bring it inside every Winter and then plant annuals around it outside once it gets warmer. I also brought the Asparagus fern indoors this past winter and enjoyed it in a sunny window. Underplanted "Villa De Paris" Dark Pink Geraniums and Diamond Frost. Only had to purchase 4 annuals to create this arrangement!
Fun Fact! The "Villa De Paris" series of Ivy Geraniums come in multiple colors, are self-cleaning, which means you don't have to dead head them to rebloom, whereas the Old Fashioned Geraniums need constant care. Such Fun!!

LOOK AT THE STRUCTURE OF THE TRUNK OF THIS SHRUB...
NOW...look right to see the before.
Yep, it was an out of control, 15 year plus, Euyonomous.
Started trimming along the trunks I liked to remove all of the greenery, also known as Trunking Up a tree or shrub. If you look at the trunk structure you may find beauty within it and remove limbs to create something beautiful, unique, and one of a kind.
My clients now love it!❤ Whereas before it was just an unsightly mess. 🙈
Always keep an open mind about your gardens to see the true beauty of what is already around you.

Its Spring Time - and I'm getting ready to create Spring Arrangements.
The flowers are beautiful, and depending on where you live there may not be a wide range of blooms to choose from. What I like to do is consider contrasting colors, leaf shapes, and patterns. Here I chose Ranunculous and a tall Palm for the middle. Then surrounded them with purple Corral Bells, variegated Vinca, and blue Pansies! Play with the patterns and colors, and you'll create something you love!

GardenStyle Quick Tip!
Did you know that a great way to double the amount of light exposure for your indoor plants is to arrange them by a mirror? I do this for most of my indoor plants and they are happy and healthy!
