We post a lot of kitchen stuff on here because that's what most people think of when they hear "custom cabinets." Fair enough. But kitchens are maybe half of what we actually build.

Closets are a big one: walk-ins, reach-ins, closet systems. Mudroom cabinets with cubbies and bench storage. Home offices with built-in desks and shelving. We do a lot of laundry rooms, entertainment centers, and wet bars too.

Basically if it's made of wood and goes on a wall, we probably build it. If there's a spot in your house that needs storage or built-ins, give us a call. Chances are we've done something like it before.

We just finished a custom display cabinet for Patrick Mahomes. Solid wood with glass doors and built-in lighting, made to hold game balls and his Super Bowl rings.

Just kidding, April Fools. We haven't heard from Patrick yet, but we are in Missouri so the offer stands.

We do build display cabinets and built-in shelving though. If you've got memorabilia, trophies, a collection, or anything you want to put on display, that's something we do all the time. Same shop that builds the kitchens, just a different project.

Glass cabinet doors went out of style for a while when everyone wanted clean, flat fronts with nothing visible. Before that, you'd mostly see them in grandma's kitchen, on china cabinets and display cases for the good dishes. Now they're becoming more popular, and we've been building a lot more of them lately.

What people are doing now is mixing a few glass-front doors in with solid ones. Maybe the uppers flanking a window, or a section in a butler's pantry.

Another big difference now is interior lighting. LED strips behind the glass doors add more to the kitchen than you'd expect, especially at night. We install them hidden behind the frame so you only see the glow.

You do need to keep the contents somewhat organized since people can see in. That's either a pro or a con depending on how you feel about putting your dishes on display.

Reeded glass is another option if you want the look without everything being fully visible. It gives a blurred, textured effect that looks good but hides the clutter.

If there's one upgrade we recommend on every kitchen, it's the lighting.

During the day, it fills in the shadows on your countertops so you can actually see what you're doing when you're cutting vegetables or reading a recipe. At night, you can turn off the overheads and just use the under-cabinet lights. Totally different room.

LED strips give you an even wash of light across the whole counter. Puck lights create pools of light with a little more drama. Both work well, it just depends on what you're going for.

Plan for it before the cabinets go in. Running the wiring after the fact means visible cords or cutting into finished cabinets. When we build a kitchen, we route the wiring during install so everything is hidden and clean.

It's one of the most affordable upgrades you can add to a kitchen project, and almost everyone who gets it says it's their favorite detail.

If you pull out the drawer of most store-bought cabinets and look at the bottom, you'll see particle board. It's basically sawdust and glue pressed into a sheet. It's cheap to make and it's in almost everything at the big box stores.

It works fine until it gets wet. And in a kitchen, something always gets wet eventually. Under the sink is the worst spot. One slow leak and particle board swells up like a sponge. Once it swells, it doesn't go back. The shelf buckles, the screws pull out, and you're looking at a replacement.

We build our cabinet boxes out of furniture-grade plywood. Not the cheap stuff with voids in the layers. It's stronger, it holds screws better, and it can handle moisture without falling apart. The cabinet is going to be in your house for 20 or 30 years. Saving a few dollars on the box material is the wrong place to cut corners.

The doors and drawer fronts are solid hardwood. Every piece is machined, sanded, and finished right here in the shop.

You can't tell any of this from looking at a finished cabinet. Everything looks the same with a coat of paint on it. The difference shows up five years down the road when one kitchen still looks new and the other one is falling apart around the sink.

Next time you're in a furniture store, knock on the side of a cabinet. You can hear the difference.

We've been getting more requests for pet-friendly features in kitchens lately.

The one that gets the most reactions is the built-in feeding station. Bowls sit in a pull-out tray at the base of an island, right at your dog's height, and the whole thing slides back in flush when you're done. No more tripping over bowls on the floor.

We also do pull-out pet food drawers with bins that keep the bag sealed and out of sight. Way better than a 30-pound bag of kibble sitting in the corner of your pantry. And if your dog already camps out under the peninsula anyway, we can build that into an actual nook with a cushion so it looks like it belongs there.

None of these add a huge amount to a kitchen project, but they make daily life a lot easier. People keep saying "why didn't I do this sooner."

Wanted to share a picture from a project we wrapped up. The client asked us to build a hidden pantry, basically a walk-in storage area behind a door that looks like part of the cabinets.

It started as something you'd only see in high-end custom homes, but we've been fitting them into regular-sized kitchens too. Even a 4-by-6 space behind the kitchen wall can hold a ton of storage if you put shelves and a countertop in there.

Most people don't want them because they're fancy. They want them because they're practical. You throw the cereal boxes, the bulk Costco stuff, the small appliances, and everything that doesn't look great on display all behind one door. Kitchen stays clean and nobody sees the mess.

We usually build the pantry door to match the rest of the cabinets so it blends in. Some people go with a statement door instead, something with glass or a different wood, but either way it works.

A closet, unused hallway space, or even a small room next to your kitchen can become one of these. Would you add a hidden pantry to your kitchen if you had the space?

Not a lot of people know this, but our owner Abe is a licensed pilot.

Comes in handy when a big project out of state requires a personal touch. Instead of working off photos and measurements someone else took, he flies out, walks the space, and scopes out the project.

You'd be surprised how much you catch in person that you'd miss from a photo.

Here's another one of our recent projects. This kitchen came together around a custom range hood that was built to match the cabinets.

A range hood is something most people don't think about until the kitchen is almost done. Then they're stuck choosing between a stainless steel box from the store or leaving the microwave above the stove.

A custom hood changes the whole look. This one was built to match the cabinets with matching paint, panel style, and trim detail. It sits right in the middle of the wall and pulls the design together. Without it, you'd have a gap that no amount of tile or hardware can fix.

Most people won't notice the hood on its own, but they'd notice the second it wasn't there.

If you're planning a kitchen remodel, don't leave the hood for last. It's worth building into the design from the start.

If you have cabinets in your house, there's a good chance they're shaker style. Most popular cabinet door in America and most people don't even know what it's called.

It's named after the Shakers, a religious group from the 1700s who settled in the Northeast. They believed everything they built should be useful and well-made. No extra decoration, just solid work. If it didn't serve a purpose, it didn't belong.

The door itself is five pieces of wood. Two vertical pieces called stiles, two horizontal pieces called rails, and a flat panel in the middle. Simple frame, flat center panel. That's it.

It ages well, too. A raised panel door or a slab door can start looking dated after 10 or 15 years, but shaker pretty much always looks right. It works in a farmhouse kitchen or a modern build. You can paint it, stain it, go any direction and it doesn't fight the rest of the room.

That's probably why builders and designers keep coming back to it. Over 200 years and it still fits in pretty much any kitchen. Hard to say that about many things.

If you're planning a kitchen and not sure what style to go with, shaker is always a solid choice.
