Shutting the vents in the guest room or the basement seems like an easy way to save on heating, but it usually backfires. Your system is sized to move a set amount of air through the whole duct system, and closing registers makes the blower push against more pressure. That extra pressure forces air out through leaks in the ductwork, often into attics and crawlspaces, and can make the furnace run hotter than it should. The closed off rooms also get cold enough to pull heat from the rooms around them. If a few rooms are always too warm or too cold, having the airflow professionally balanced is a better fix. Most ceiling fans have a small switch on the motor housing that changes the blade direction, and October is the time to flip it. In summer, blades spinning counterclockwise push air down and create a cooling breeze. In the colder months, running them clockwise on low pulls cool air up and pushes the warm air that collects near the ceiling back down along the walls. High efficiency furnaces vent through two white PVC pipes that run out the side of the house, one pulling fresh air in and one pushing exhaust out. In October, those pipe openings become a favorite spot for birds, wasps, and mice looking for shelter before winter. If either pipe gets blocked, the furnace senses it and shuts down as a safety measure, which usually happens on the first cold night. Take a look at the openings from outside and make sure nothing is built up inside or around them. Keep mulch, leaf piles, and shrubs at least a foot away too. Springboro and Lebanon homes with the pipes close to the ground are the most likely to have a surprise waiting.

If the furnace filter hasn't been changed since the AC started running in the spring, it's probably been working hard all summer. October is when the heat takes over, and that same filter now has to handle a whole new season of airflow. A clogged filter chokes the blower, drags down efficiency, and can cause the furnace to overheat and shut itself off. Standard one inch filters usually need swapping every one to three months, while the thicker four and five inch media filters can go six months to a year. Pull yours out and hold it up to a light, and if you can't see through it, it's time. Mason and West Chester homeowners, a fresh filter now is the easiest thing you can do for the furnace this fall.

Cooler outdoor air holds less moisture, and once the furnace kicks on, indoor humidity drops fast.
