This beautiful multi-generational cottage is cherished by the owner. Inhabitect, LLC is improving their property and the surrounding habitat by protecting the shoreline from erosive activities and runoff with a hybrid bioengineered (natural) shoreline.

This shoreline has been getting eaten away for decades and has lost nearly 10 ft in recent years. These images show the first stages of construction on this project and the owners are thrilled.

At Inhabitect, we approach landscaping, site design, outdoor living spaces and ecological restoration with unique perspective and proven experience. At Inhabitect, we support pollinators by actively restoring natural habitats through native and ecologically mindful landscaping – we strive to create lasting resiliency on every project.

You can make a difference in your own backyard by implementing sustainable landscaping solutions. Challenge yourself to adopt the following strategies:

• Restore Habitats with Native Plantings: Use native plants that provide essential food and shelter tailored to local pollinator species.

Join and the on June 19th from 10:30 AM–11:30 AM. We will meet at the Glen Lake Community Library (10115 E Front St, Empire, MI) to explore nature-based solutions for our local waterways.

This is a FREE event that is open to the public.

Together we’ll explore:
- What happened to the Glen Lake shoreline this spring.
- Practical, lake and river-friendly shoreline protection strategies, including alternatives to traditional riprap, hard armoring, and seawalls. You will learn about bioengineering and natural approaches , and the role of native plants in building more resilient waterfronts.

Meet the Team ✨

Brendan Alcorn, Landscape Designer 💻🎨🌱

Six years in, and Brendan Alcorn keeps raising the bar.

Brendan joined Inhabitect with a Bachelor’s in Architecture & Environmental Design and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture — both from Kent State University — and has spent his career studying the diverse landscapes and climatic zones of the Great Lakes region. That depth of knowledge shows up in every project he touches.

This spring, he passed his LARE exam. Congratulations, Brendan — Licensed Landscape Architect incoming. 🎉
Beyond design, Brendan brings serious technical firepower to the team: CAD and GIS proficiency that sharpens our project analysis and design process, plus FAA-Certified Drone Pilot credentials that give us aerial photography and surveying capabilities most firms can only dream about.

His hands-on experience spans shoreline remediation, green roof installation, and hardscaping construction — and his favorite scope of work? Residential site design. He brings the same attention to detail to a backyard as he does to a full-scale ecological restoration.

Brendan’s design sensibility is inspired by Piet Oudolf, and his work is driven by a genuine belief that water conservation, smart urban design, and green stormwater infrastructure belong in every community. When he’s not at Inhabitect, you can find him outside - hiking, kayaking, boating, snowboarding or capturing it all behind the lens.

We thrilled to have Brendan on Team Inhabitect and look forward to another exciting year of his creative and inspired work.👏

This Earth Day, we’re getting our hands dirty — literally.

The Inhabitect team is proud to be volunteering with the Leelanau Conservancy’s Wildflower Rescue Committee this spring. For 27 years, this program has saved native ephemeral plants from development sites before roads are paved and foundations are dug — giving trilliums, trout lilies, and other woodland wildflowers a second chance.

It’s exactly the kind of work that reminds us why we do what we do.
