Over the coming days, we're taking you hole by hole through the newly restored Swope Memorial Golf Course, highlighting the thoughtful renovations that honor A.W. Tillinghast's original design while enhancing play for generations to come. Starting out with Hole No. 1, because first impressions matter.

Renovation Spotlight: Hole No. 1

The new era of Swope Memorial Golf Course has begun.

Swope Memorial Golf Course has been an important part of Kansas City's golf community since opening in 1934. Originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the course remains one of the few municipal layouts created by one of golf's most influential Golden Age architects.

The restoration effort focused on preserving the character and strategic intent of the original design while updating the course to meet the expectations of today's golfers and maintenance practices. Working with Todd Clark and Brent Hugo of CE Golf Design, with Ron Whitten serving as contributing architect, the project was guided by historic photographs, archival research, and careful attention to the details that define Tillinghast's work.

Mid-America Golf & Landscape served as the golf course contractor for the restoration, reconstructing greens, bunkers, tees, drainage, irrigation, grading, and course shaping throughout the property. Led by Chief Operating Officer Jason Lewis, Project Manager Grant Cobb, and Project Superintendent Trevor Leeper, the team worked closely with the design team to faithfully execute the restoration while integrating modern construction practices throughout the course.

Behind the restored Golden Age architecture lies a modern drainage and irrigation infrastructure designed to improve water management, enhance maintenance efficiency, and support the course's long-term sustainability. Despite an unusually wet construction season, the project remained on schedule through careful planning, coordination, and quality craftsmanship.

We appreciate the opportunity to help restore one of Kansas City's historic public golf courses and thank the City of Kansas City, Kansas City Parks & Recreation, CE Golf Design, Golf Course Superintendent Josh Lynn, and everyone involved in bringing the project to completion.
