How Our Company Began

I grew up in a family where “nothing was given to you”, it had to be earned. I learned at an early age the reward of working hard, doing a good job and treating others fairly. I also learned early that everyone has a different opinion on the definition of “fair”. To me, that just meant work harder and providing more. More in value, more in consideration and more in gratitude.

I always thought the key to building a great company involved finding good people to work with (employees as well as customers). It is good practice to w**d yourself of both.

I started Atcheson Lawn and Landscape at the age of 10. I mowed lawns in the neighborhood and filled the downtime with everything from cleaning gutters, pulling w**ds, hauling trash and shoveling snow. It didn’t really matter to me what I did, as long as I did something productive and earned money. I never priced anything by the hour as I placed a higher value of my time than most others. Therefore, the less hours I spent performing a specific task, the more I earned per hour. Simple math…

Early on, I caught the attention of an individual that owned a small shopping center down the street from where I lived. He hired me to mow the grass, clean the parking lot, shovel the walks and clean out the incinerator (back then grocery stores burned their waste). The job didn’t pay that great, but it was the first step to getting in the door with a commercial property management company. That quickly led to starting a relationship with another company that hired me to maintain a very large shopping center, then office buildings, warehouses and large business parks. By the time I turned 16 and entered high school, we had two crews, employed several people and learned everything that came with running a company (both good and bad).

We continued to grow this company year after year by treating people right, providing great service and working incredibly hard. Nobody provided capital to buy equipment and trucks, many tasks were done the hard way, likely loading salt and sand into a truck with a shovel only to shovel it back out again on a parking lot. “Whatever it takes” was our policy. We invested everything back into the company so that new equipment could be bought, thus saving time and working smarter. Again, nothing was provided, it had to be earned. We weren’t the smartest, we learned many things the hard way, but the learning curve was positive. For each mistake made along the way, we worked harder and put in more hours to make up the loss. I guess that had a profound influence on the “learning curve”.

Today, we continue to operate under the same beliefs and values. Work hard, work smart, do a good job and treat people right. Pretty basic, but then again, most things are simple when you eliminate the BS.
