🚨 Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Community members are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they suspect an emergency involving propane or natural gas.

Fire and rescue units have responded to multiple reports of both indoor and outdoor gas leaks today and expect to continue doing so throughout the weekend. During colder temperatures, gas meter diaphragms can freeze, causing metal components to contract and creating potential gaps in seals. Consequently, rubber gaskets may harden, lose their flexibility, and fail to contain the gas, resulting in a faint odor around the meter.

If you consistently notice this smell or detect gas inside your house, please contact us immediately.

It's crucial to keep gas meters and exterior vents free from snow and ice, as obstructions can cause meter malfunctions, reduce energy efficiency, and even lead to carbon monoxide buildup in your home. During and after snowfall, use your hand or a broom to remove snow buildup, as shovels can damage vent pipes. If ice accumulates, carefully scrape it off with a non-damaging tool.
