So I did a metal roof for a gentleman I have great respect for but his son( Dan Angelo )on the other hand I'll let you decide now I only did the porch roof the main roof was already done I don't know who did it but that's the point he posted on my timeline that the chimney I flashed which should have been done by the guy that did the main roof he says the chimney should have been flashed with galvanized metal apparently matching the roof which was russet red he also said that in the middle of me installing this metal roof he had a inspector who quote specializes in metal roofing this so called inspector told him that's a chimney that I flashed should have been flashed with galvanized metal how many contractors use galvanized metal when flashing a chimney I think he thinks that the metal roofing is also galvanized the thing is, it's not . It's painted and if it gets scratched it'll rust and if you're inspector was an inspector he would have told you that. when flashing any chimney I use Alcoa aluminum coil stock, do they make russet red coil stock? Yes they do I had no need on this job to buy a roll of russet red coil stalk and to do 5 ft of a chimney in russet red wouldn't have been worth it seeing how one box is about $160 which is 24 in by 50 ft so with my labor it would have been almost $500 just to put a five foot piece of flashing on a chimney is that fair to the customer this is where the respect comes in. Did I think about it? yeah I did, was it worth it to the customer I don't know you tell me $150 because of the how high it is or $500 because I had to buy a whole roll of coil it would have been worth it to me I would have had 45 ft of russet red coil leftover an $340 for a half hours worth of work just because I pay $160 for a roll of coil that doesn't mean the customer pays $160 for that same roll of coil add 35%
When you do a metal roof and your butting up to a wall the material on the wall needs to be removed or cut too allow for your flashing to go behind said material in this case it was aluminum siding so my first piece of metal gets put up against the wall but prior to installing I use my 12 ft brake an bend a 4-in bend at 90°, which acts as my flashing to go behind the siding which would have been russet red which you will see in the pictures but the wife didn't like the red being exposed and she wanted the white which was the color of the siding to go all the way down to the roof so even though it was flashed she still wanted me to put white flashing over top of the red again as you can see in the picture (see attachment photos ) this inspector also said that my furring strips were not secured and they were not at 24-in or 2 ft intervals my first row was it 28 in please note that I use 1x4 x12 ft furring strips not 1x2s or 1x3 and when they get secured they get secured using 8 Penny galvanized ring shank nails now the galvanized doesn't matter because it'll never get wet but the ring shank part is what secures the furring strips to the roof joist so to pacify this guy the son Dan Angelo I took that second row off and dropped it down at the 24 inch mark the thing is it doesn't matter if it's 24 inches or 36 inch intervals as long as the furring strips are secure and they are secured to the roof joist and in a straight line so that when you secure your metal your screws are in a straight line so anyhow back to the inspector if he was an inspector when I pulled in he wouldn't have took off the way he did.if I'm not mistaken it was a silver Chevy with the ladder rack no I don't mind criticism just don't lie on me to boost your ego
