In this video, I’m sharing an issue we’ve encountered with plug-on-neutral AFCI and GFCI breakers.

On this service call, we initially replaced the breaker and tested the circuit. Everything worked properly, but the tripping returned. During the return visit, we found a poor connection where the breaker connects to the neutral bar.

We’ve seen instances where replacing a plug-on-neutral breaker with a compatible, traditional pigtail AFCI or GFCI breaker resolves the tripping.

My suspicion is that inadequate contact at the plug-on-neutral connection may allow arcing and contribute to the breaker tripping. That’s my assessment based on what we’ve observed in the field.

Older homes with aluminum wiring require extra care when replacing receptacles and switches.

Standard devices commonly sold at hardware stores are often rated for copper wiring only. Connecting aluminum wiring directly to a copper-only device can lead to corrosion, increased resistance, heat, and potentially a serious fire hazard.

The proper solution is to either use approved copper/aluminum-rated connectors and transition to copper before connecting to the new device, or install a receptacle specifically rated for both copper and aluminum wiring.

If your home has aluminum wiring, make sure whoever is doing the electrical work understands the risks and knows the proper procedures for working with it.

A little look at what we’ve been up to this week. ⚡

Some jobs we started, some we finished, and plenty of work in between.

I’m grateful for our crew, our customers, and everyone who continues to trust Shield Electric with their homes and businesses. There’s a lot that goes into each project that doesn’t always make it into a picture, but it’s rewarding to look back at the end of the week and see what we accomplished.

I’m going to try to make this a weekly thing and share a quick recap of what we’ve been working on.

This one needed a little more than a lamp change.

At some point, all the original fluorescent lamps and components had been ripped out, and a residential closet light fixture was screwed into the top of the sign as a makeshift light source.

We removed the makeshift setup and converted the sign to LED, giving it proper, bright, even illumination again.

Sometimes the job isn’t just an upgrade—it’s fixing what was done before.
