Balusters are being crafted in our carpentry shop for the beautiful Vaile Mansion in Independence, Missouri. The mansion was built in 1881 by Colonel & Mrs Harvey Vaile.

The mansion features 31 rooms including 9 marble fireplaces, spectacular painted ceilings, flushing toilets, a built-in 6,000 gallon water tank, and a 48,000 gallon wine cellar. This mansion is one of the best examples of Second Empire style architecture in the United States.

Balusters were expertly built by one of our talented craftsmen, Daniel Chamberlain. Excellent work, Daniel.

Endangered NO More// We’re highlighting stories of success, once-endangered sites that are now thriving and contributing to their communities, while also focusing attention on the extraordinary efforts undertaken to bring them back from the brink.

The Elbridge Arnold Homestead, built in 1855-56 and recognized as the second oldest home in Kansas City north of the river, was overshadowed by burgeoning suburban development when the Mid-Continent Public Library purchased it in 2008 for a new library. Upon completion of the Woodneath Branch in 2013, focus was shifted to the rehabilitation of the new library’s focal point: the Elbridge Arnold Homestead.

With the intent to create a center where story telling is a natural extension of the space, the imposing Greek Revival style homestead was painstakingly restored to preserve and stabilize the existing historic materials remaining in the home, remove non-original additions, and open the building up to create. Now called The Story Center, this rehabilitated piece of Kansas City history naturally enhances the experience for all who come to learn about the arts of oral, written, and digital storytelling.

Frost Flowers
While the plants’ stems are ruptured by the first hard freeze, the root system is still sending up plant sap from the warmer ground. The sap pushes through the broken stem and freezes on contact with the cold air. As more saps moves up, it forces the freezing stream of white ice crystals into ornate, folded ribbons that look like petals, puffs of cotton candy, or snarls of white thread.

Missouri plants that produce them
Missouri plants known to produce frost flowers include dittany (Cunila origanoides), stinkweed (Pluchea camphorata, which is not widespread in Missouri), and white crownbeard (Verbesina virginica). Scientists don’t know what it is about these species that allow them to produce frost flowers. Perhaps their root systems are more active later in the year than other species, or their stems rupture in just the right way to force the ribbons of sap. Whatever the reason, frost flowers only appear on the stems of a few species.
