On a recent roof inspection, we found shingles that were incorrectly nailed with:
• Overdriven nails
• Side-driven nails
• Nails placed outside the manufacturer’s nail zone

From the ground, the roof looked fine.

But underneath, the shingles were never properly secured which is exactly why shingles eventually began blowing off.

To help homeowners understand the difference, I wanted to show what a properly installed shingle should actually look like.

In this video, you’ll see one of our installers nailing directly within the common bond zone the manufacturer’s designated fastening area designed to properly secure the shingle system.

Small details like nail placement make a massive difference in the long-term performance of a roof.

Because at the end of the day, even the best shingles in the world can fail if they’re installed incorrectly.

This home was built in 2019.
From the ground, the roof actually looked pretty good.

Architectural shingles. Fairly newer roof. Nothing immediately alarming to the average homeowner.

But this is now our FOURTH time back out to replace blown shingles.

So what’s really going on?

The problem isn’t necessarily the shingle itself.
The problem is HOW the roof was installed.

After inspecting the roof system closely, we found:
❌ High-nailed shingles
❌ Overdriven nails
❌ Side-driven nails
❌ Underdriven nails
❌ Nails completely missing the common bond/nailing zone

In other words:
The shingles were never properly secured the way the manufacturer intended.

And unfortunately, once that happens, the entire roofing system can become compromised especially during high winds.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in roofing:
A roof can LOOK good from the surface… while being completely installed incorrectly underneath.

Even if this had been a premium shingle upgrade, the shingles still could have failed because improper installation voids the integrity of the system itself.

At this point:

* The manufacturer warranty is likely voided
* The builder warranty has already expired
* And workmanship coverage may no longer apply

That leaves the homeowner stuck dealing with recurring issues years later.

This is exactly why proper installation matters just as much as the material itself.

A roof is not just shingles.
It’s a complete system and the details underneath are what determine whether it lasts 5 years or 30 years.

If you’ve experienced recurring blown shingles, leaks, or repeated repairs, it may not be “bad luck.” It may be an installation issue hiding underneath the surface.

A roof leak usually isn’t caused by “one bad spot.”
Most of the time, it’s years of neglect slowly catching up.

We inspected a small commercial modified bitumen roof that had severe ponding water, failing seams, and membrane separation along the parapet walls. The entire system was holding moisture and breaking down.

Unfortunately, once a roof reaches this stage, repairs often become temporary band-aids instead of long-term solutions.

Our recommendation:
✔️ Full tear-off
✔️ Proper drainage correction
✔️ New energy-efficient roofing system
✔️ Secure wall terminations and flashing
✔️ A roof designed to keep water OUT of the building for years to come

A commercial roof is supposed to protect your investment, not become one of your biggest liabilities.

If you own or manage a commercial property in the Kansas City area, it’s always better to catch these issues early before they turn into interior damage, mold, insulation saturation, or structural deterioration.

No pressure. Just honest inspections and straightforward advice.

Did your roof take a hit in the last Paola storm?

Most homeowners never actually see hail damage… and that’s the problem.

In this video, I’m up on a roof here in the Paola Kansas walking you through exactly what we look for during a professional inspection:
✔️ Hail impacts on soft metals (vents, valleys, flashing)
✔️ How chalk reveals dents you normally can’t see
✔️ What “bruising” looks like on shingles (this is the big one most people miss)

Here’s the truth , your roof might look fine from the ground, but up close it can tell a completely different story.

If enough of these impacts are present, it’s not just cosmetic… it’s functional damage that can shorten the life of your roof.

If you’re brave enough to get up there, this video will show you what to look for 👀
If not , that’s what we’re here for.
