DID YOU KNOW!?

Leaving a hose on your outdoor faucet over the winter months could cause it to freeze and burst!

It's that time of year again when you need to wrap up your garden hoses for the winter months if you live somewhere where it gets cold. By leaving a hose on the faucet, it doesn't allow the vacuum breaker to remove the remaining water in the faucet housing, causing it to freeze and expand during cold temperatures.

If you're not sure that you have taken off your hose in time, I have a quick way that you can check to see if it's still in good shape.

Thumb Test
1) Remove any hose or attachment on the faucet
2) Turn the water on slowly
3) Place your thumb over the outlet and try to hold it there to stop the water
4) If your thumb is pushed off, then you know that the faucet is still good, meaning it is holding pressure. If your thumb isn't pushed off, this water may be escaping through a crack in the faucet housing therefore letting water leak into the inside. 😬

So remember to check your outside wall hydrants every spring before using them to ensure they are in good condition.
