We always thought these were catalpa trees, but in the winter you can see that the seed pods are different. A little research later, they turned out to be paulownia, an invasive species from Asia. It's a fast-growing tree with lightweight but durable wood which is now used for sustainable harvesting. For fun we milled a few boards with a chainsaw, and turned them into bases for retail displays.
