Marigolds earn their spot in the vegetable bed, and not just because they look cheerful next to tomatoes 🌼

The real payoff is underground. Planted thickly and turned into the soil at season's end, French marigolds can help suppress root-knot nematodes over time, which makes them a smart companion around tomatoes, peppers, and root crops. Above ground, their blooms pull in bees and butterflies all summer long.

They make the rest easy too:

It spent one to two years underground. It has about three weeks as an adult. It doesn't eat during any of that time. 🌿

The firefly (family Lampyridae β€” Photinus, Photuris, and related species across the US) is one of the most recognized summer insects in eastern and central North America, and one of the most ecologically specific. The glowing display you see on a summer night is the entire reproductive window of an insect that spent most of its life as a larva in the soil and leaf litter of your lawn.

The life cycle:

Year 1 to 2 as a larva β€” underground and in leaf litter, hunting slugs, snails, earthworms, and soft-bodied insects. The larvae are predators, and they are also bioluminescent β€” the faint glow you sometimes see near the soil surface on warm spring nights is a larva. Each calorie consumed during this stage is stored for the adult phase.

Night 1 β€” emergence. The adult firefly emerges from the soil, flies for the first time, and begins signaling. Adult fireflies eat nothing. Their fat reserves from the larval stage are their only fuel.

Nights 2 to 10 β€” signaling. Males fly in species-specific flash patterns while females perch in vegetation and respond with answering flashes. The timing and pattern of the flash is species-specific β€” Photinus pyralis, the most common eastern species, flashes in a characteristic J-shaped arc every 5 to 6 seconds.

Nights 11 to 15 β€” mating. Successful pairing. Eggs are laid in moist soil and leaf litter.

Nights 16 to 21 β€” reserves exhausted. The light dims, the flight slows, and the adult dies.

About 500 hours. No food. No second chance.

What's killing firefly displays in American gardens:

Artificial light at night is the most significant single factor. Males use female flash responses to locate mates β€” and artificial lighting drowns out that signal, making it impossible for males to detect females. A porch light, a security light, or a landscape lighting fixture running from dusk to midnight during June and July directly reduces firefly mating success in the surrounding area.

Pesticides eliminate the larval food supply. Slug baits, soil insecticides, and broad-spectrum sprays that reduce slug and worm populations starve firefly larvae in the years before they ever reach adulthood.

Mowing removes larval habitat. Firefly larvae live in the thatch layer and moist soil below taller grass and leaf litter. Short-cut lawns with no leaf litter provide little habitat.

What to do: turn off outdoor lights from dusk through midnight during June and July, leave leaf litter in garden beds and borders through winter and spring, avoid soil pesticides and slug baits, and mow high (3 to 4 inches) to maintain the organic layer where larvae live.

The frogs disappeared first. Then the dragonflies. Then the water started running too fast, too dirty, too far β€” and the floods got worse. 🌿

The US has lost more than half of its original wetlands since European settlement. Most of that loss accelerated in the 20th century through agricultural drainage, development, and the straightening of waterways. What replaced the wetlands now costs money to replicate: water treatment plants, flood control infrastructure, groundwater recharge systems. A functioning wetland does all of these things for free.

What a healthy pond or wetland actually does:

Water filtration β€” aquatic plants, sediment, and soil microorganisms remove nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants from water passing through. A small farm pond or constructed wetland can remove a significant proportion of agricultural nutrient runoff before it reaches downstream water bodies.

Flood buffering β€” wetlands absorb and hold water during storm events and release it slowly. Drainage and development that removes wetland area is one of the main reasons that flood peaks are higher and arrive faster downstream than they did a century ago.

Groundwater recharge β€” water that infiltrates through a wetland contributes to the aquifer below. The same water that used to spend weeks slowly percolating downward now runs off impermeable surfaces within hours and is gone.

Wildlife foundation β€” 100% of North American amphibian species depend on wetland habitat for at least part of their life cycle. Amphibian populations have declined sharply across the continent, with habitat loss as the primary documented driver. Dragonflies, herons, wood ducks, mink, river otters, and hundreds of invertebrate species all depend on this infrastructure.

At the garden scale, a wildlife pond β€” even a half-barrel water feature, even a shallow depression β€” contributes to this system. Frogs that establish in a garden pond eat slugs and insects across the surrounding area. Dragonfly larvae that hatch in a garden pond hunt mosquito larvae for years before they emerge. The habitat created in one backyard connects to the habitat in adjacent yards and the wider landscape.

The services a small pond provides were never visible until they disappeared. That's the nature of infrastructure β€” you only account for it when you have to pay to replace it.

A pond isn't an obstacle. It's infrastructure. 🌱

Tree roots need oxygen as much as they need water. When the soil surface around a tree is sealed under pavement or metal grating, gas exchange between soil and atmosphere is reduced. Rainwater gets deflected into the drain rather than infiltrating to the root zone. On summer days these hard surfaces heat up significantly, raising the temperature of the soil directly beneath them. Over time, roots under sealed soil can become oxygen-deprived and stressed.

The roots that push up and crack nearby sidewalks are usually a symptom of this stress β€” the tree is sending roots toward the surface where conditions are slightly better. The tree gets blamed for the damage when it's responding to conditions the paving created.

What happens when you open up a tree ring with living groundcover:

Surface roots can breathe again. Rainwater infiltrates naturally into the root zone instead of running to the nearest drain. Earthworms and soil organisms return, improving soil structure. The space becomes a small habitat β€” beneficial insects, beetles, birds foraging at the base β€” instead of a patch of compacted bare soil or heat-radiating pavement.

This matters at the garden scale too. If you have a mature tree in your yard with compacted soil around the base β€” from foot traffic, vehicle access, or old paving β€” opening that zone up and planting groundcover can measurably improve the tree's long-term health and root access to water.

How to create a planted tree ring:

Remove any impermeable surface as far from the trunk as practical β€” ideally to the drip line, but even a 3 to 4 foot radius makes a difference. Work carefully to avoid severing major surface roots. Loosen compacted soil gently with a hand fork rather than a tiller. Apply 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch β€” pulled back 4 to 6 inches from the trunk itself to prevent rot at the bark. Then plant.

Good groundcovers for shaded or semi-shaded tree rings across US zones: wild ginger (Asarum canadense, zones 3–7), foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia, zones 3–8), creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera, zones 5–9), liriope (zones 5–10), coral bells (Heuchera, zones 4–9), sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum, zones 4–8). Choose species suited to your shade and moisture conditions β€” the tree canopy will intercept rain and create dry shade.

Urban trees in good health provide shade, cool streets, absorb rainfall, support wildlife, and can live for generations. Giving their roots room to breathe is one of the simplest ways to help them get there. 🌱

You saw a spider in your garden or bathroom and immediately thought "is that a brown recluse?" Almost certainly not. North America has over 3,000 described spider species. Two merit caution. The other 2,998+ are catching the insects you don't want. 🌿

The two worth knowing by sight:

Black widow (Latrodectus spp.) β€” shiny black abdomen with a red hourglass marking on the underside. Found in undisturbed dark spaces: woodpiles, storage sheds, under rocks and outdoor furniture, in dense ground-level vegetation. They don't wander into open areas. If you're reaching into a woodpile, gloves are appropriate. Bites are medically significant but fatalities are extremely rare with treatment.

Brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) β€” uniform light brown with a violin-shaped marking on the cephalothorax, six eyes in pairs (most spiders have eight). Present primarily in the central and southern US β€” not found in most of the country. Bites most often happen when the spider is trapped against skin in stored clothing or bedding. Avoid contact; seek medical attention if bitten and you're in their range.

The ones you see every day are working for you:

Jumping spider β€” the small, compact, large-eyed spider that watches you from the wall. Hunts by stalking, not by web. Cannot harm you. Eats flies, gnats, and small moths. The curious behavior is genuine interest β€” their forward-facing eyes give them excellent stereoscopic vision.

Wolf spider β€” the large fast-moving spider crossing your garden path or floor. Looks alarming, is harmless. The female carries her egg sac and then her spiderlings on her abdomen β€” the large "spider" you sometimes see is a mother with her young. Eats ground-level pests including slugs and their eggs.

Cellar spider / daddy-long-legs β€” the spindly spider in the corner of your basement or shed. Not venomous to humans despite the persistent myth. Actively hunts and kills other spiders that enter its territory, including black widows.

Orb weaver / garden spider (Argiope spp.) β€” the large yellow-and-black spider in the decorative spiral web in your garden border. Rebuilds her web partially or entirely every night, consuming the old silk to recycle the protein. Catches hundreds of insects per web per week.

Common house spider β€” the cobweb in the corner of the room catches flies, gnats, and mosquitoes continuously. Free, quiet, and persistent pest control.

Two out of thousands. The spider in your bathroom is almost certainly not either of them. 🌱

All spring, while every other bird in the yard was building nests and raising chicks, one brilliantly colored songbird was doing none of that. It was waiting. It had a reason. 🌿

The American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) nests later than almost every other songbird in North America β€” not in spring, but in July and August. While bluebirds are on their second clutch and robins are fledging their third, goldfinches are just beginning. This isn't a biological delay. It's precise synchronization.

American goldfinches are among the most seed-dependent songbirds on the continent. Unlike most birds that switch to high-protein insects to feed nestlings, goldfinches feed their young almost exclusively on regurgitated seeds. They can't nest before the seeds they need are ripe. And they don't just eat thistle seeds β€” they build their nests from thistle down. The same silky material that carries thistle seeds on the wind becomes the dense, cup-shaped nest lining. The female weaves it so tightly that the nest can hold water.

This means goldfinches are biologically locked to mid-to-late summer. Their family calendar runs on the clock of the flowers, not on the calendar that governs most other birds.

While the rest of the yard winds down in August, goldfinches are at peak nesting activity β€” raising their young in the seed heads that everyone else has written off as w**ds.

What this means for your garden:

Leave the seed heads standing. Thistles, coneflowers (Echinacea), black-eyed Susans, ironw**d, and native asters β€” let them go to seed instead of deadheading in summer. That late-season fluff is the goldfinch's nest and food supply in one. A patch of native coneflowers left to go to seed will have goldfinches working them through August and into September.

The goldfinch wasn't late. It was running on a different clock β€” the one the flowers set. 🌾

You lift a stone in the garden and find a centipede coiled tightly in a spiral, body wrapped around something at the center. The first instinct is to reach for something to kill it. Wait. 🌿

What you're looking at is a brooding chamber. The female stone centipede has coiled her entire body around a clutch of eggs and is actively guarding them. This behavior β€” present in several centipede species including the ring centipede (Scolopendra cingulata) in the South and the common stone centipede (Lithobius forficatus) across much of North America β€” is one of the more remarkable examples of parental care in garden invertebrates.

She won't leave. While coiled around the eggs she grooms them individually to prevent fungal growth. She defends them from predators. After hatching she remains coiled around the young until they're ready to disperse.

What centipedes do in the garden: they're nocturnal predators that hunt under stones, in leaf litter, and in rotting wood β€” consuming slugs, worms, insect larvae, and other soil invertebrates. They're part of the decomposition and predation layer that runs while you sleep.

One honest caution: centipedes can bite and their venom produces a painful localized reaction, similar to a wasp sting for most people. Do not handle them with bare hands. Don't pick them up. Respect them from a distance β€” that's the appropriate level of interaction. The stone centipede commonly found in North American gardens (Lithobius forficatus) is far less potent than tropical species, but the same rule applies: observe, don't touch.

You don't need to touch her to let her live. The nest under that stone will disperse on its own within weeks. Put the stone back down, gently, the same way it was.

Most people can't tell a true dandelion from the half-dozen plants that look nearly identical in the lawn. The difference matters more than you'd think. 🌿

True dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has three identification features that are consistent and reliable:

One hollow stem per flower. No branching. A single scape rises straight from the basal rosette to one bloom.

No leaves on the stem. All the leaves grow at the base in a ground-level rosette β€” deeply toothed, the teeth pointing backward toward the root. Nothing growing partway up the stem.

Single flower head per stem. One flower, one stem, always.

The plants commonly called "false dandelion" β€” cat's ear (Hypochaeris radicata), hawkw**ds (Hieracium spp.), hawksbeard (Crepis spp.), and bristly oxtongue β€” share the yellow composite flower but differ in key ways: branching stems carrying multiple flower heads, leaves present on the stem, and a generally stiffer or hairier appearance compared to the smooth true dandelion stem.

Why this matters for your lawn and garden:

True dandelions are among the most valuable early-season pollinator plants available in a North American lawn. They flower before most other plants are open, providing a critical nectar and pollen source for emerging bumblebee queens and early native bees in March and April. Their deep taproot pulls up minerals and loosens compacted soil.

Many of the false dandelions are also native or naturalized and provide similar pollinator value β€” so from an ecological standpoint, both are worth leaving in unmowed patches.

The identification matters most when foraging (true dandelion leaves and flowers are edible; some lookalikes are also edible but others are bitter or less palatable) and when managing specific plants in the garden.

The hollow stem test is the fastest field check: snap the stem of a suspected dandelion. If it's hollow and releases milky white sap, it's a true dandelion. 🌱

Eight companion plants worth growing with cucumbers, and what each one actually does:

Bush beans fix nitrogen in the soil through root nodules, which becomes available to neighboring plants over time. Cucumbers are heavy feeders and benefit from improved soil fertility.

Nasturtium draws aphids away from cucumbers β€” aphids genuinely prefer nasturtium foliage and will colonize it first. It also attracts beneficial insects and the flowers are edible.

Radishes grow fast, loosen compacted soil, and their root channel improves drainage without competing significantly for nutrients. Harvest them young so they don't crowd the cucumbers.

Lettuce shades the soil under cucumber vines, keeping the root zone cooler in summer heat and suppressing w**d germination. Low-growing leaf lettuce works best.

Dill attracts parasitic wasps and hoverflies β€” both of which prey on aphids, caterpillars, and other common cucumber pests. Plant it near but not directly under the cucumbers, as mature dill can inhibit cucumber growth in dense proximity.

Meadow sage (Salvia nemorosa) β€” blue-violet flower spikes from late spring through summer. Drought-tolerant after year one, highly attractive to bumblebees and native bees.

Sedum / stonecrop (Sedum spp.) β€” succulent with rose-bronze fall bloom. Requires almost no irrigation and tolerates poor soil and full exposure.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) β€” flat-topped yellow flower clusters. Native across North America, thrives in poor dry soil, long bloom season.

Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) β€” a light annual that tolerates moderate summer drought and self-seeds reliably for the following year.

Finish with 2 to 3 inches of gravel or pea stone mulch β€” it reduces surface evaporation significantly more than bark mulch and improves drainage around the root crown, which is where most drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants rot.
