🌿 A couple interesting pieces of LC Valley history…
Our area has a lot more history tucked into it than people sometimes realize. Between Lewiston, Clarkston, Asotin, and the surrounding country, there are stories all over the place, from old travel routes and river traffic to farming, homesteads, and deep Nez Perce history.
📍 Lewiston was once Idaho’s first territorial capital.
Lewiston became the capital of the newly created Idaho Territory in 1863, before the capital was later moved to Boise. That’s a pretty big piece of Idaho history sitting right here in our backyard.
🏡 Clarkston had a few names before it became Clarkston.
Before it was officially incorporated, the area was known by names like Jawbone Flat and Concord. It was later named Clarkston in reference to William Clark.
🌊 The Asotin area has deep roots, too.
The name “Asotin” comes from a Nez Perce name that was recorded in English as “Has-hu-tin” or “Hassotin” before eventually becoming Asotin. The area around Asotin Creek was historically important for seasonal camps, travel routes, and natural resources.
It’s pretty amazing how much local history is packed into the same neighborhoods, hillsides, gravel roads, river areas, older properties, and open spaces we drive by every day.
And just like the history around here, every property has its own story, too. Some yards need regular mowing, some need cleanup after years of growth, some need gravel w**ds brought under control, and some just need a fresh start to look cared for again. 🌱✂️
