🌧️ Where is your rainwater going after it leaves the roof?
After heavy rain in Central Kentucky, a quick check around your home could help you catch a drainage problem before it becomes costly interior water damage.
If you live in Lexington, Wi******er, Paris, Mount Sterling, or surrounding Central Kentucky communities, here are five areas worth checking after a heavy rain:
✅ 1. Gutters
Look for overflowing sections, sagging gutters, or leaves and debris blocking water flow.
✅ 2. Downspouts
Make sure rainwater is being directed away from your foundation—not discharged directly beside your home.
✅ 3. Foundation
Watch for standing water, damp walls, new cracks, or soil that remains saturated long after the rain stops.
✅ 4. Basement or Crawl Space
Check for musty odors, damp flooring, wet insulation, or moisture collecting around windows and foundation walls.
✅ 5. Ceilings and Walls
Look for new water stains, bubbling paint, or soft drywall that could indicate water entering through vulnerable areas around your roofline.
💧 WHY CENTRAL KENTUCKY SOIL MATTERS
Overflowing gutters and poorly directed downspouts can send large amounts of rainwater toward your foundation.
Here in Central Kentucky, some properties have clay-rich or slow-draining soils that can hold moisture longer. When the ground becomes saturated, water may collect against foundation walls and find its way inside through cracks, gaps, basement windows, or other vulnerable openings.
And here's something homeowners don't always realize: Water damage isn't always immediately visible. Moisture can become trapped behind drywall, beneath flooring, or inside insulation.
⚠️ WATER DAMAGE & MOLD: THE FIRST 24–48 HOURS MATTER!
When water enters your home, acting quickly can make a significant difference.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends drying water-damaged materials within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth.
Even a seemingly minor water intrusion can become a bigger problem when moisture remains trapped in building materials.
🏠 A FEW MINUTES OF PREVENTION CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.
Check your gutters, inspect your downspouts, and look around your foundation after heavy rainfall.
If you discover water inside your home, photograph the damage, move valuables away from affected areas when safe, and avoid electrical hazards around standing water.
