Cold Weather Plumbing Safety Tip ❄️
With upcoming cold weather fronts moving into our area, we want to take a moment to share a few simple tips to help protect your home and prevent unexpected plumbing issues. At Pipe Surgeon Plumbing, we care about our community and believe that a little preparation can go a long way in avoiding costly and stressful cold-weather damage.
When temperatures drop to 32°F or below, your plumbing becomes more vulnerable to freezing. To help protect your system, allow a small, steady drip from both hot and cold faucets during extreme cold. Moving water is less likely to freeze and can help relieve pressure in the line if freezing begins.
Be sure to insulate exposed pipes in attics, crawlspaces, basements, and garages, and avoid running water lines directly against exterior walls when possible. In attics, piping should be positioned below insulation, closer to the heated space. In crawlspaces, keep piping elevated and away from open vents or cold air gaps.
A few additional steps — like sealing drafts, opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate, and disconnecting outdoor hoses — can make a big difference in protecting your home during cold snaps.
