HLP Systems is an industry leader in the lightning protection and grounding systems field around Chicago and across the Midwestern United States. From the tallest structures in the world to a house in your neighborhood, HLP Systems has installed thousands of systems to precise Underwriters Laboratories and National Fire Protection Association codes. We are highly experienced in commercial high-ris

e, residential, transient voltage surge suppression requirements for power, data, and communication, and everything in between. Though most of HLP's installations are near Chicago, IL, we have installed systems all over the United States. No project is too large, small, or difficult for HLP Systems.

Congratulations to Clayco and partners on the completion of Stead 220 in Fulton Market. It’s exciting to see continued growth in this neighborhood with projects that bring housing, retail and thoughtful design together.

Projects like this rely on coordinated building systems from the ground up. We appreciate the opportunity to help protect the building’s infrastructure for the long term.

A clutch capture as always by Nick Ulivieri.

Dramatic to watch, but the buildings are ready. The HLP systems are in place and doing their job.

Boom! After pummeling hail in the early evening, Chicago was treated to a spectacular light show over the skyline. Here’s my first big lightning shot of the season.

This is (only) a 2-frame composite. As best as I can tell, two large bolts with multiple major branches struck the eastern antenna mast of the Hancock. The two frames were taken five minutes apart.

Thanks to all the meteorologists who helped keep us informed on TV and social media. Incredible job and impeccable forecasting //

Always good to see Tim Harger and Kelly Collins out front for the Lightning Protection Institute. Love seeing LPI helping lead the conversation around resilience, safety, and doing this work the right way.

We are so excited to announce The Lightning Protection Institute's Kelley Collins and Tim Harger as keynote speakers for our Resilient City Expo in Miami!

Their talk is titled: Engineered Resiliency: Your Blueprint for Certified Lightning Protection Systems and will explore how certified Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) are a critical risk mitigation tool that builds structural and infrastructure resiliency.

Build long-term protection as Kelley and Tim guide you through the standards-based process for risk assessment, proper design, third-party certification, and maintenance protocols.

Our trusted partner the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) advances standards-based lightning protection and personal safety through leadership, education, and trusted resources.

They collaborate with architects, engineers, building enclosure consultants, contractors, facility management professionals, and insurance stakeholders to support the full project lifecycle: assessment, specification, installation, independent inspection, and maintenance.

Vaisala Xweather’s 2025 Annual Lightning Report offers a closer look at how lightning patterns are changing across the U.S., including increased activity in and around Chicago. These insights reinforce why tracking data matters and why proactive mitigation plays a key role in building resilience.

Lightning protection helps reduce risk as conditions evolve and demands on infrastructure grow.

U.S. lightning hit an eight-year high – and the 252 million strikes we detected in 2025 are reshaping how communities, stadiums, and energy providers plan for safety.

From game-day evacuations to wind turbine damage, the new Vaisala Xweather Annual Lightning Report 2025 reveals where, when, and how lightning is putting the most pressure on critical infrastructure.

Globally, we detected over 2 billion lightning strikes in 2025. For weather-sensitive businesses, this kind of detection data is needed to enable faster, safer decisions when it matters most.

Read the key findings and explore the data in the report: https://brnw.ch/21wYQfL.

Wrapping up the year with appreciation for the people behind the projects. Thank you to the architects, contractors, engineers, owners, and lightning protection industry colleagues we’ve partnered with this year, and to the HLP team for generously serving others with excellence, integrity, and a shared commitment to the work.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to come alongside so many incredible professionals and excited to continue building together in the year ahead.

The AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion at The University of Chicago is taking shape, with advanced technology planned throughout the building to support patient care, research and clinical collaboration. Those tools depend on consistent, uninterrupted access to power and data so patients and staff can fully benefit from them every day.

Reliable helps reduce the risk of disruption to sensitive systems, supporting the technology this facility is designed around. We appreciate the opportunity to support this work as the pavilion moves closer to opening.
