Tip of the week : When looking at buying a new door, whether it's interior or an exterior door, take these thoughts into consideration before heading to the store. 1. what way do you want the door to swing - stand with your back against the hinge side of opening, if the door opens to your right it is a right hand door, if it swings to your left it is a left hand door. 2. what size is the door - measure the actual door slab width, common sizes-24,30,32 and 36 other sizes are generally special order, measure slab height, usually 6 foot 8 inches or 80 inches tall and do not forget to measure how thick the slab is - 1 3/8 inch is common other thickness is available. Measure the thickness of your wall - it will make a difference on the door jamb if it is a 4 inch or 6 inch wall. 3. do you want door drilled for lockset, if it is exterior do you want another hole for deadbolt. 4. is door going to be painted or stained, on exterior doors you can buy already painted certain colors or stained. 5. on exterior doors do you want wood, metal or fiberglass. 6. do you want just the slab to put in your frame or the complete door and frame assembly - you can even get doors with a split jamb with trim already installed. 7. does your door need a threshold - wood or metal - how high is it. 8. if you are going to install yourself you will need a bundle of shims, 3 inch construction screws, quality caulk and 10 penny galvanized finishing nails if it is an exterior door, a good quality 2 and 4 foot levels. 9. take the time to write everything down, along with any other thoughts or questions you might have, so when the salesman starts with his jargon you will be relaxed and ready and it will be a smooth process. Good luck and happy building ! If you have any questions don't be afraid to call, text or message Dennis Sheley Construction !
